Transfer rumours - summer 2021 edition

They did the same with Maddison while we fcuked around making silly low offers for Grealish. They'd gone from registering their interest to signing him in 2 weeks. If you know who you want and they are available for a fair price then there something to be said for doing the deal early, before others (like us) get their act together and give your manager a whole pre-season with the player.

People used to say on here that the reason we take so long on transfers is that we need to wait for our rivals to do their business first so we don’t go for the same players. Never understood or agreed with that logic. I suppose we have to wait to Leicester and West Ham to do their business now. I remember years ago when Villa bought Darren Bent. There was paper talk one day and they’d signed him 24 hours later. Granted there would have been some work going on in the background but we seem to be linked with players with months before anything happens.

Could be that the links are gonads and no one knows what our plans actually are

Maybe if it was a one off summer, but when it happens year after year. When you read countless articles from different directors and owners from other clubs saying how Levy likes to haggle for months over little things or renegotiate once a deal has been done. Then I think it is rather churlish to constantly take Levy's side as it is pretty clear he holds us back.

I understand and agree with the rule of not spending beyond your means. Also having figures in mind for what you sell your players for. But Levy has clearly been holding as back with regards transfers.

Or claiming it’s the other clubs moving the goalposts. Maybe sometimes it is, but it’s got to be on us sometimes too tight?

That’s also likely. But It was very common to read on here that the reason we left deals late was we had to let the likes of United, City, Arsenal etc do their business first before we made any signings. Surely what Leicester are doing makes more sense as they buy players before the big fish get involved or players that have been overlooked by said bigger clubs? The logic apparently was we had our targets, but we had to see how the summer played out and allow the bigger clubs to do their business first so we could see if they wanted our targets or not. That strategy makes no sense to me.

I guess it depends on who you want first and foremost
Also tournaments have a big impact too

True. Doesn’t stop other clubs signing people though. Leicester and Liverpool have already signed players.

It has been this way for 20 years. Which is why I want Levy to give up his office at the training ground and get a director of football in.

Would be happy for us to have a zero net spend each summer so it is not about the amount of money we spend but how we spend it and how we go about business. Have no belief we will change tack with Levy as manager.

It really holds back the coach because he does not know who he is getting in. I also do not buy the whole summer International tournaments thing because they happen every 2 years and often players we sign late have not been involved in summer tournaments.

Who have Leicetser signed?
Pool have signed a player by activating his release clause
We don’t even have a manager currently so it would make sense to wait until that man is here

I thought they signed Soumare? Maybe I got that wrong and it’s still in advanced stages.

Agree re the manager but we’ve had managers in place before during tournament years and we’ve still signed players later than most other clubs.

Yup agree he is sabotaging the new manager already.

Also the slight problem of not having a manager in place might slow this process down (even more)

Not really this is all playing into levys hands ... Levy buys and offers the players to the manager not the manager getting the player he wants.

Strong rumours here that Onana, the Ajax goalkeeper, is off to Arsenal. He's still suspended for a few months because of a failed drug test, but he's a much better goalie than Leno and a shrewd buy for a really low sum (under 6m).

I think Leno is bette myself
Onana always has a mistake in him (people will say the same about Leno) but Leno plays sweeper keeper well

Sky are suggesting that the fee Leicester are paying for Soumare is one that 'could reach' £18m. That is such an incredibly good deal and it frustrates me that we're not set up to take advantage here and bring in a long term player for a key position in the team.

That would involve us having an actual scouting network, not just Hitchen and a clipboard.
