It's ridiculous the amount of overreactions 1 win or 1 good performance causes. 1 game later after several people claiming he's now suddenly a better player (AFTER 1 GOOD GAME FFS) he plays brick. I just find it amusing.

Fair enough matey, you're entitled. I'd say he's a smarter player this season overall personally (I am one of those people you're referring to I know) but tonight, he simply didn't seem to perform at all. Who knows why?

I think Im guilty of taking a longer-term view of this whole situation. If that's something to be guilty of. Ah well...
 
Not impressed with Dembele. I thought he was incredibly lazy, really looked like he could not be bothered. That said apart from Dawson and AVB, no one seemed interested.

Mediocre by what standard? Not Premier League standard, certainly.Even a mediocre PL side should have been able to win this. A mediocre Greek Superleague side, even. We looked worse than Pana for the second 45, and that's largely down to the players sitting back and living easy. Our mentality in this competition's been brick for years, and improving it is going to take a lot more than some optimistic statement of intent on the OS.

Sigh. What right have we to treat this competition with such disdain? We won it twice in its older form, and we've only been in the CL/European Cup TWICE in our 130-year history.

Thats the main thing. Yes I am disappointed we threw away a chance to win in Greece, but as you say play like that on Sunday I'll be livid.
Its not the point, but if the Club truly does want to progress, we should stlll qualify. Double header v Maribor coming up

They do mate, and there were some tired performances out there for sure. But in the grand scheme, we did not lose the match (I agree we should've won)...my biggest concern would be fatigue/travel affecting the Villa performance. As you said earlier, that is a vital game before the international break. But to be clear, when I see people saying this is one of the worst performances in blah blah, I feel a little sad because it patently isn't!

^^^ Reply to Steff I feel sorry for AVB a bit. He has publically stated he wants to have a go at winning this competition and has backed that up in his actions. Regardless of what the senior players think of the competition, they should be professional and should certainly show some respect to the manager and try to win the thing.

Mate you are one of them but there's many. I mean this bozo commentator just now has highlighted EXACTLY what i'm getting at just now. Referring to Liverpool he just said ..

"They'll be expecting big things based on current form"

ahhh current form you mean the current form that has seen them win ONE fudging GAME THIS SEASON YOU macaronIC taco. People literally just look at your last result when judging things.

Because if we don't, we'll go out early every time we're in it. And the more we do that, the faster our seeding points fall. In time, we'll be fourth seeds in any group stage we enter, and unseeded in any qualifier we play in, only making it harder for us to qualify for the latter stages. And then, presumably, we'll be moaning about our mistake in not taking the competition seriously when we were still top seeds.

the fact that the manager is taking the competition seriously (therefore so should the players) should mean that we are concerned with a performance like that - last season under Redknapp your point would have held more weight as it wasn't a priority so a poor performance meant less
