Well, that was superb.
For all that we would obviously have preferred to be in much sooner, the impact of seeing the close-to-finished model is almost worth the wait.
I had a huge smile on my face approaching the stadium and walking around the concourse area, as well as a tear in my eye on walking out into the stadium bowl. My ST is in the Paxton, so seeing the huge, single tier stand facing me was just amazing. I can’t wait to see it and hear it - at full capacity. It is going to be fantastic.
I was pleased during the game that there was a fair bit of singing around me. I don’t know if they were ST holders or not but it augered well for a good atmosphere in the Paxton stand also.
Everything feels so close to the pitch and the accoustics are great. To actually be able to properly hear a pitch side half-time interview was a novelty all of its own. Music, announcements, etc all came through loud and clear.
The interior was also superb. I only walked around the lower level (saving the upper levels and exterior for next week), but it feels extremely spacious and there are so many different outlets to choose from. Whereas before, all the bars/food counters looked much the same, now there is so much colour and individualism in each area and a real vibrancy about everything on offer.
I was a bit sceptical about the concept of people staying behind after a game, and time will tell once the novelty wears off, but having been there I can see why this would work.
All in all, we have an excellent, world class stadium in our possession. It was great to hear the loud round of appplaise when Poch paid tribute to Levy. Whatever faults he may have to some, he has well and truly delivered on this project. Hats off.
