STILL WINNERS!!
That is all
I watched a re-run of the whole game for the first time yesterday (and for first time on tv).
What really came across (as it kind of did on the night), is how damn hard we worked. Relentless energy, especially in that first half. Then when we had a lead to defend, we were all out to protect our goal. It was a high octane game with very little pattern and tbh not much incident.(An afterthought was the weather, just an average day in Bilbao, if you compare that to the Madrid final and such tactics would be soooo much harder to execute, these little circumstances do help)
It was slightly weird on the night as the game went as I thought it would. So although on one level racked with anxiety and nerves I had this level of comfort that what I was seeing was what I expected.
I always thought if we could get a goal, United were in trouble.
Mentally, we got the better of them too...that's a big flip from days gone by.
They were all heroic but special mention to Biss had the game we needed him to. And Udogie showed the power and energy we needed... especially to give us some respite in that second half.
Plus that VDV moment... iconic. (We must be able to logo that 'air Jordan' stylee)
The celebrations at the end were epic. Rather than euphoria....it felt like such a release, a weight lifted, a longing rewarded at last. 'We did it!' was the tear inducing words of the moment. (Maybe with a few expletives)
Son for me, he looked like a man possessedBrennan was the one that I noticed. When he came over to almost the left back area and put a block in I was thinking to myself that I'd to see more of that Brennan.
Son for me, he looked like a man possessed
I'm with you on that one. Richi was knackered and Son started slowly - it was like a switch got flipped and suddenly we were on the back foot without an outlet. That's interesting. I actually though Son was poor when he came on. He was knocked easily off the ball, couldn't retain possession and for me, it wasn't his best sub appearance at all. Richi had to come off though. He was out on his feet, and had taken the yellow. It would have taken a brave coach to leave Sonny on the bench and bring Tel on ahead of him. Probably what the game needed though tactically, but perhaps not from a leadership perspective. Having someone at the other end of the age spectrum made sense for that reason alone.
Johnson again?Closing of a circle.
Johnson scored our last and most important goal in the Europa league...guess who scored our first?
