I do wonder when lists like these are data-driven. If at first the result their algorithm spits out has Messi as the 5th most important player, do they just tweak the algorithm to get him back on top? I think they would... :)
 
Whoscored's(which is also statistically based) top 5 players of the season were:

1. Messi
2. Ribery
3. Ronaldo
4. Kiessling
5. Bale/Suarez
