Tom Carroll

The boy Carroll done great. AVB's treatment of our youngsters has been excellent. He stood up well to physical challenges tonight.
Lazio away Thursday 22/11
West Ham home Sunday 25/11

Thought he looked great very composed if maybe slightly too much twice there were players wide and he had acres of space to push forward into and collect a ball but he just sat back suppose that's something that comes with games but on the ball looks excellent reminded me of a very young carrick at west ham

Rat faced fudge was hardly Arnold was he? A lot of it is based upon centre of gravity, and simple core strength, see Emile Heskey.
Put him in, has some creative spark, gave me hope!

I thought he was great. Some lovely through-balls (even if they didn't all come off), and a Modric-esque tenacity on the ball. Calm head on him too - if Stoke don't bother him, he'll be fine anywhere else.

If Harry was still here he'd be on loan at Birmingham for the next two seasons.

(ducks...)

He should play sunday...the only mitigating circumstance would be fitness. I'd most certainly start him, and maybe Sandro can be eased in as Caroll tires. If the midfield/forwards are the same Sunday, then we will create chance. This is one of those moments where you really wish Benny was fit, how many times did he storm forth and play a little inside pass to Luka, who in turn played someone in fast? Carroll has the brain.
He is a true Tottenham player.
Had me beaming from ear-to-ear tonight, and beyond the sublime passing, his positional sense/hunger for the ball was fantastic!!!

Still looks a good talent and this was probably his best game. There's a massive difference between facing Maribor and Emirates Marketing Project though.

If Sandro is fit he starts imo, we need him desperately in this game.

WHich is why I play Sandro with Carroll...the space will be there for Carroll to work...if Ade starts behind Defoe in a 4-4-1-1, I think it'd be a great overall threat. We have some time with Carroll before anyone knows his style, further, once he'd played 'that' pass Thursday, you could see the rest of the side trust him with the ball twice as much. Greatest shame is Benny isn't fit, as he would love to work with a player like Carroll...how many times did Benny start attacks by moving forwards, finding Luka and then everything opened up?

With Ade (not) protecting the midfield and Carroll alongside Sandro we would end up defending very deep and conceding a ton of space to City.

You highlight some positives about him starting that I think are hypothetical, we don't know how it's going to work out for 20 year old Tom Carroll to start his first Premier League game away to the Champions in one of the toughest games of the season. He will get a lot less time on the ball than against Maribor, a lot less space and probably see a lot less of the ball, a lot more chasing back as well as being up against a completely different caliber of players.

If he was to start it should be alongside Sandro and Hudd in my opinion in a 4-3-3 where we pack the centre of midfield, not leave it wide open.

It can work out to start him, but it's a massive gamble, and in my opinion it can really backfire for his development as well, won't do his confidence any good if he ends up being outplayed and outclassed and taken off at half time. If we had no one else that would be a gamble we had to take, but we have both Huddlestone and Livermore as more experienced options. Give Carroll a start in one of the home games first.

Carroll will be up against Yaya Toure, Javi Garcia and Gareth Barry; three players who cost a combined total of about fifty million quid, who are all stronger, quicker and more experienced than him, and who are currently champions of England, playing in their home stadium.

He'll either play so well we sign him to a ten-year deal the next day and slap a 100 million pound price tag on his head, or he'll get horribly bullied and lose every bit of the confidence that he had against Maribor.

Big, powerful men with years of PL experience have been bullied by Yaya Toure. This is not a game to put young Carroll in.

Sandro and Hudd all the way. Save Carroll's debut for one of the less physical sides in the league; Swansea, perhaps, or Fulham.

We won't know what he is like unless he plays will we? Sure, them three are experienced Premier League players but so were Fabregas, Flamini, Rosicky when O'Hara made his Premier League debut away at the Emirates stadium in a North London Derby.

This isn't me saying I think Carroll should start, but I do think if he has confidence from Maribor we should give him a chance, thing is if Sandro is fit, you'd think he'd play Sandro/Hudd as I don't neccesarily think Hudd should be dropped for him, he is vital in getting Lennon/Bale involved quickly into attack.

I wouldnt be against Caroll starting tomorrow. His workrate will be better than Huddlestone's who might struggle with the pace of the game tomorrow.

Don't think he is ready for his PL debut away at City, unless there are no other options. I'd give him time in less challenging games first, to see how he goes in a fast paced PL game, and to give him experience. I think he has the potential to be a very good player for us, if he keeps developing and takes his chances.

We won't know how good he is until he plays, true. But we have to give him the best possible introduction, in order to give him the best platform to succeed when his first 'big' game comes along. Bossing a game against Maribor is only good if he then goes on to boss another game against slightly better opposition, and then so on and so forth, so that when he starts against the big boys, he'll have both the experience and confidence to succeed.

Bossing the Maribor game and then being eviscerated by Toure and co. in the City game are just two mutually counter-productive steps, imo.

I agree, his long term development should be paramount

If Sandro's fit, the boy should play. Toure would boss him for sure, but he can handle Barry; yes, you can mark me for that! ;-)...I am not worried about Garcia.

The thing about this match, as opposed to (say) Swansea or Fulham is that City @ Eastlands will play to attack and this will leave space for a player like Carroll to work in. I think he could have the impact on our season Cleverley did for Man U. As long as Ade or Dempsey are prepared to drop in deep and work WITH him, like they worked with Luka, then for me, he starts.

Sometimes you have to make a judgement call. He is not a 'new' player, he's got some experience around the league. I'd do it. We talk about long-term development, but I guarantee you the player himself wants to take the chance now, because he knows in Jan, AVB will go shopping again thus his long-term development may not be given any further chances!

Cleverly did have two impressive loans though, first with Watford in the Championship and then with Wigan in the Premier League. Carroll couldn't even get in the Derby team last year. But I agree with everything else, give him a go!
