Toby Alderweireld

So let me see if I've got this right, Mr Levy who's raison d'etre is to make transfer negotiations a living hell for all concerned has put in a clause which ties his hands and makes him redundant. That must be the Santa Clause.

Sorry....people thought that DANIEL LEVY, the guy who got Luka Modric to sign a contract extension based on a "gentleman's agreement" and then told him he'd rather let him rot in the reserves than sell him to Chelsea until he eventually got his head down and started playing again, would accept a release clause of less than what City paid for either Mangala or Otamdendi, for TOBY ALDERWEIRELD?

I really despair for the world. There's an acceptable level of stupid in any society but it's 2016 and we have far too many people pushing well beyond it these days.

A bit OT, but according to recent leaks, Firminho has a similar release clause in his contract (set to €98m!), that entitles him to negotiate with any club that meets the clause - unless that club is Arsenal. They explicitly state that Arsenal are extempt from this clause, which I find quite funny.

That could be read both ways, actually.

All this talk about gay footballers coming out makes me wonder when Firminho is going to tell the world he is a ladyboy.

Tottenham Hotspur are confident they will agree a new contract with Toby Alderweireld long before a potential £25million release clause can be triggered.

A report from the ‘Football Leaks’ website stating that there is a £25m release clause in Alderweireld’s contract prompted an almost instant denial from Spurs.

Telegraph Sport understands that the clause is only active in the summer of 2019 if Tottenham take up a one year option and extend his deal to 2020. Alderweireld’s contract also states that any transfer would have to be completed at least 14 days before the closure of that summer’s transfer window.

Spurs have refused to comment further on the matter and only reiterated the fact there is no active clause in Alderweireld’’s contract in its present form.

Even though the clause is of little immediate concern, Tottenham are aiming to add Alderweireld to the list of players to sign a new contract and the club will take out the one-year option that includes the £25m buy-out.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino insisted he did not know the exact terms of Alderweireld’s contract, but did not seem worried by the situation. “I don’t know the details of his contract,” said Pochettino.

“But not one player has a buy-out clause, I have never heard that in England. It’s a detail I really don’t know.” Alderweireld’s current contract is understood to be worth £50,000-a-week – less than half the new deal Harry Kane signed and £20,000-a-week lower than Eric Dier’s.

The Belgium international can expect to move into the £70,000-a-week bracket, but Pochettino was coy on when an agreement may be struck and said: “You need to wait. It’s a private matter.”

Alderweireld has been out since October 15 with a knee injury, but will return to the Tottenham substitutes’ bench against CSKA Moscow on Wednesday night and could be in contention to start against Manchester United on Sunday.

“Toby will be involved in the squad,” said Pochettino. “Yes, I’m happy and he’s recovering well. It’s important for him to be involved.

"Maybe will be on the bench, it’s important for him to recover that feeling. “He’s one of the best central defenders in the Premier League. He showed last season his quality by the way he behaved on the pitch.”

This is the most Levy thing ever.
A £25m release clause at the end of his contract.
If no one wants to pay it then we have the option to renew for another year.

As if Levy would ever let him get to one year left in his contract without selling him anyway.

I think Bankrupt Spurs posted elsewhere on the internet that the clause *exists*, but that it is not at present active and won't be for a long time (iirc). That tallies with what the Telegraph are saying.

I'd like to think most fellow fans here know my views on Levy by now. I'll go out of my way, then, and say that, on this matter, I can't find anything whatsoever to blame him for - he might be tight when it comes to buying players, but he's an absolute master when it comes to selling them. Can't be beat there. So I'm very much at ease with whatever this clause turns out to be - Levy wouldn't have left it in there if he was even minutely uncertain about the chance that it might get activated before he's 100% comfortable with letting it happen.

And if @Modric THFC 's reading is true, then that's hilarious - a 25m clause that only comes into effect if no one decides to take a punt on him at the very end of his contract and we automatically extend his deal. I'm not sure if that's the work of Toby's agent or of Levy himself, because that's so thoroughly weighted towards Danny boy. ;)

Makes you wonder why someone would put such a clause into a contract in the first place.

Me and the wife have an agreement that I can sleep with Liz Hurley should I get the chance but if I do then as part of the agreement she is immediately allowed to hold her ladies only arts and crafts nights at the House.

What's the catch?
