Toby Alderweireld

You're telling me. I had no idea it was on today, and have no interest in these games. Am watching eggball instead.

Eggball has more rules than one of my war games!
I’m fine with NFL but eggball proper is far too esoteric.
I used to have to listen to many upperclass twits guffawing about the game at school.
I’m a football ⚽️ and cricket man!

England are smashing the Scots to pieces 19-0 after 13 minutes! That is all I know.

Also, the commentator said the Scots defence was getting desiccated i.e. they have had all their moisture removed. Strange, I didn't realise that was part of the game.

Send that quote to Private Eye. You might win a tenner.

From SSN tonight:

Toby Alderweireld says he does not know if he will be a Tottenham player next season.

At the turn of the year, Spurs triggered a clause in Alderweireld's contract to extend his deal until 2020, but in doing so activated a £25m release clause in the summer transfer window.

Alderweireld, who turned 30 earlier this month, has been an integral part of Tottenham's Champions League-chasing squad in this campaign, featuring in 38 games in all competitions.

And speaking ahead of his country's European Qualifiers against Russia and Cyprus, the Belgium international said his only focus is on ensuring Spurs end their season well.

He told Sky Sports News: "There's a lot to play for this season. And in the end I have a year contract left at Spurs, so I don't look further than this season.

"Other things I don't know. I am very happy at Spurs, so we will see what the future brings.

"I still feel very fit. I think I played a lot of minutes this season so I showed that I am fit - I don't feel 30, I feel younger.

"So as I said, I am very happy and I just try to watch game-by-game. This season there is a lot to play for so I will give my best for that."

Would fricken love it if he stayed

There was a crafty little trap which the interviewer put in too.... along the lines of “at 30 years of age Toby, is it really important you get this next move right?”

Toby responded with “yeah, yeah but I still feel really fit, I’ve played a lot of minutes this season......”

Wrong Toby, wrong!!! The correct answer was “what next move?”

Seems likely he wants his last big move but how does it work? If the right club doesn't come along within the restricted window that's been set, could he not choose to stick it out? Or is he obliged to go regardless if a £30m bid (or whatever it is) comes in? If so would the club be obliged to accept or could they still offer him an increased contract at the last minute ?

If course he could.
The release clause just means the club have no power to reject a £25m bid.

Just like any accepted bid, the player still then has to be agreeable to move to the bidding club.

However, the aging cynic in me says that he has (unofficially and informally) got terms with United in the bag already and they are simply now awaiting the date of the release clause becoming active to submit the necessary £25m bid.

What if Cheatski or Arse come in for him and he chooses to stay in London, does the club have no option but to accept?

The release clause is activated by the sum of £25m being offered. There is no stipulation reported around who can or can’t offer it.

As long as the bidding club has £25m to spend, they can offer and the club can accept.
It is then down to the players agent and the bidding club to agree a deal, or not agree a deal.

Imagine this scenario then...

Goons offer £25m.
Behind the scenes, Toby tells club he's no interest in going there, wants to stay and help Spurs.
Levy tells him club have accepted offer as he's ageing and they don't want to re-enter into contract talks again.

Toby ends up at Arsenal with majority of fans hating him for it.

I think in that scenario the player would either feel aggrieved enough to accept the incoming contract offer (having negotiated the highest wage possible) or wisely await his contract expiring and take a Bosman in order to have 100% control over every element of his future.

However I feel that scenario is very improbable. If the arsenal offer was suitable, I couldn’t see Toby telling Levy he wants to stay!

Reference fans hating him for it. He’d simply have to release a statement confirming he asked to stay, but the club declined to offer a new deal.
Exactly the same as Aaron Ramsay has done at Arsenal.
