Toby Alderweireld

Its pretty standard (for all fans tbh) to just believe whatever they read that puts their club in the better light.

So Alderweireld went from best cb in the league and one of the best in the world to past it within a space of about 4 months. And all the players who we end up not signing or who refuse to not sign a contract do so because of 'moved goalposts' from the other side. Looking forward to the same stories about Eriksen and Alli soon enough.

Or Poch actually meant make no signings when he said be brave and that he actually wanted to play lots of youth players, something he has shown absolutely no inclination to do so far this season.

Anyway, was a shame to not see him even in the squad, though all 3 of the cbs have looked shaky so far this season at times.

He was hurt for much of last season and did not come back the same player. I hope he remains benched unless we go to a three, but I hope Poch returns to 4-2-3-1 as it suits us and is what we know/have personnel for/play the best. I wanted us to sell Toby abroad: had his wage demands not been so silly he would not be here!

I just find the timing quite convenient that most on here were declaring him as the best CB in the league to past it over the space of a few weeks, right around the time he asked for more money and his contract negotiations went pear shaped. I’m guessing he’d instantly go back to one of the best CB’s around again if he signed a new contract.

Perhaps. If he got one from us, I’d hope you were right. Sadly I don’t think so though mate.
For the record, I have wanted him sold for a while now, and have been clear on that:

He's always been a magnificent CB (well, except in that one Carabao Cup game against Spam last season).

What changes is the way we rationalize that fact - if he appears constantly want-away, we try to downplay his excellence in order to cope with the prospect of him leaving. And if he seems okay for now, we return to praising him.

That's what we do as supporters, anyway. I suspect the view from the club's always been the same - that he's a damn good CB who will weaken us if he leaves, but also that he's burned a lot of bridges with his contract antics.

I think we're now at a stage in his contract situation where we can expect 100% commitment even if we don't reach agreement on a new contract. After all, he'll want to play to his potential in order to maximize his signing-on fee next season.

So we don't mind playing him, and he equally doesn't mind playing for us. And right now, that means we can go back to realizing how very good he is.
