Timo Werner

Get Maddison back and having Son, Werner and Johnson chasing his through balls should be pretty scary. Against the likes of Arsenal, City etc could be a great tactic.
Relentless and brave. And you can miss a few chances if you know you'll keep creating them.

Some days that'll be 1-0, others someone will get a right spanking. Either way, the oppo will know they've been in a game.

Funny that ppl belive he is the answer up front.. I will mark this and say Im wrong if he bangs in goals… but nothing Ive seen telles me that is going to happen
He has speed, is a good dribbler, and has an eye for a pass in the final third. He doesn't need to be the one doing all the scoring, but these attributes alone will cause problems for opposition defenses and open up spaces for others to score.

No one player can replace Kane, but Ange's system with the right players can replace the goals we lost by Kane leaving. And Werner ticks a lot of boxes for this system. It's as simple as that and so far we've scored more goals at this stage of the campaign since the 18/19 season. A player that fits the system is only going to add to that.

Two things:

1. Werner is low on confidence. I don’t think he’s recovered from playing under Fat Frank. But he has still got the skills and pace that saw him become one of the hottest prospects in Europe.

2. The way Werner plays, and indeed the way he was playing during those golden years, is very much in keeping with Postecoglous ethos - quick fluid moves to unlock the opposition. Both of them are aligned. Werner’s strengths are attributes Postecoglou looks for. Can beat a man. Can outpace most defenders and does well with quick fluid play.

Psychologically I don’t think Werner has recovered from his experience at that brickry club in west London. Can’t be easy going back after a failed move. And he’s been in a funk since. Now it’s time to step up, regain some confidence and play some fluid, quick football with Son, Maddison and Kilu.

I doubt he's the answer to not having a 30+ goals striker.

Is he the answer to "Who the fudge do we replace Richarlison with until Son gets back?" Quite possibly.
See I don’t get this, a total of 2 strikers hit 30 last season, rest under 20. Season before don’t think any hit 30, we don’t need 30 we need a consistent 15-20 with the likes of Sonny, Maddison, Kulu etc hitting 10+. Even Richy is on track for over 10

Need to take your chances when you get them
If that means 1 goal or 30

I agree in general, although we play a more risky style now and will probably need more goals than we have before.

It's very clear that what we do need is a significantly less wasteful striker. We've struggled through a lot of matches that would have been put away early by anyone vaguely clinical.

Son is clinical.

He scored 9 in 12 games as a cf this season. Compared to 3 in 8 games as lw.

That doesn't tell you what's best for the team overall though, does it?

Son's spent most of his club career as a wide forward - he's a specialist at it. One of the best there is. Whilst he can do a job from the middle, I don't think you'll find many people who think it's his best position.

You said we need a 30 goal striker. We have one. Werner gets more assists than son, better at carrying the ball aswell. So him on the left son in the middle. S korea seem to play son more in the middle now aswell. He hasn't played on the left in their last 8 games.

If we need to look at it again in the summer, fine. But for this season i'd rather him in the middle than richie.

That's not a 30 goals striker. Assuming he does get 30, that's 30 minus however many he would have scored from the left.

Either way, having Son, Werner, Johnson, Kulu and Maddison able to rotate for 4 spaces is very promising.

Son spent the most successful part of his career with us at least as a run in being wide attacker with a striker that liked to drop drop and space opening up centrally.

This system is rather different to that with wide attackers being asked to play wide much more and a striker stretching play, staying high up.

He's great wide when he gets scoring chances. Other than that he's at best good, at worst mediocre.

For me he's best as a striker in this team. But that may not be what's best for the team as you say. A quality left winger would change that. Werner isn't that. But perhaps that isn't a possibility this window.

Werner is a good option. Up front and wide. He's probably not going to be great, but he should fit the system reasonably well and he's a good player. On a loan that's fine.

A 30 goal a season striker probably isn't possible in January.

Agree on options and rotation/movement. We've been very short of even good attacking options (particularly on the bench) recently. This goes some way towards sorting that out. That's good.

All very fair.
This will be a nice fresh start.
And if there is ever someone to get your confidence back up and motivate you.......it's Big Ange mate!

Ange has said more than once that he sets great store upon the character of a player and how they'll fit with the group. With that in mind, it was good to read this from Matt Law about Werner's time at Chelsea:

"One thing I would say is that he’s a great lad. I dealt with him a lot at Chelsea and the dressing room will love him, even when things were going bad at Chelsea he was very popular behind the scenes. I know coaches and clubs do a lot of due diligence into the characters of players, and I’m sure that is a huge thing for Ange. He will slot in well in that dressing room, he will be well-liked at the club, he’s a great lad, seriously"
