Thomas Frank - Head Coach

Honestly...if you go back and watch those first ten games it was some of the best passing, brave electric attacking play we've seen across many many managers
It was indeed very good, I remember being surprised at how good it looked considering the players we actually had but it never had any balance to it and even then it lacking crisp cutting edge, there was a lot of just , it relied too much on overwhelming the opposition and keeping the side compact so we always had a passing option available. Once opposition teams worked out the flaws they just exploited the very same flaws game after game.

What I would have loved to see is that system given some proper structure, but I honestly think that was the only way to get that calibre of player to be able to play that football. It needed a little bit more structure and pragmatism to the system.

Too many analysts on his interviews and treatment of Xavi despite him playing more than most, then dropped, then picked and drops a 10......

Lucky Frank

I wasn't going to get into this TBH, but the Funkmeister's got my hips and lips swinging!!!

First off, well done Thomas. He picked a side designed to play front-foot.

Regarding Xavi. Two really important factors aside from giving him a 'free 10' role. Muani outside him and able to link/connect/move, and Archie Gray's intelligent awareness of time and space. Add Bentancur having a good game as a consequence of Gray's intelligent stability, and Xavi was given a platform on which to shine. Which he did. Frank has previously seemed to lack the cajones to deploy this way.

It's been pretty clear that Xavi is a 10 who needs license. I know some people thought he was too lightweight, however when played in the areas he knows he has very good self physical awareness (BTW those tackles today too)...

Here's hoping Frank continues to allow us us to breathe and play this way. We only looked 'off' when we hesitated and went backwards. I understand the occasional need for pragmatism, but it cannot be tinker-pragging!!!

Anyway, great selection by TF, and here's hoping this is the approach from now on. COYS!!!

This is what made a huge huge difference to the way we played
No errors
Great use of the ball
Covering the defenders when they attacked (particularly DJed who was great)

Been critical of Frank and his negative approach, but am happy to give him huge credit for today. Right from the off there was so much more attacking intent. The press was good, players being brave on the ball, and a number of really good quick balls through the lines. The best game passingwise from Bents in a long time. Xavi, Gray and Kolo all excellent not only on the ball but the work they put in too.

Hopefully this is a sign of things to come and not just a one off.

I agree, given the fact we are all on the same hymn sheet I will give TF the benefit given that Xavi has played more than anyone than Kudus, got dropped buy equally minutes and then came back like a man possessed, anyone else and we would be calling that awesome management, as he is our manager, I will give him that for now given the end results...........

Today he got everything right
Needs to manage his squad now for Tuesdays game and deliver performance away next weekend

Today was the best we have played under him in the league by some way

Indeed.
Onwards!

I'd argue its largely to the manner of the win in the context of the season as a whole. It wasn't a season of great performances with the occasional disappointment, buoyed by the triumph of finally breaking our 17 year duck. It wasn't an indifferent season, salvaged by a great cup run with amazing nights and punctuated with great moments. It was an historically bad season in terms of the league campaign, filled with dreadful performances and an unflinching unwillingness to adapt to the pain, that was rounded off with a cup win that if we are honest none of us are going to look back at the actual performances and remember great moments individually other than the end result itself. There was no Ar5na1 for example or the final itself where we pummelled Chelsea (but didn't score as many as we should).

Add all of that and to another season where many of the same problems we have seen are present along with a whole raft of new ones and this season feels much like a continuation of the last 5 years, not necessarily in terms of style but in actual effectiveness. If we think of it in terms of wins and losses, especially at home nothing has changed or improved. I said this at the start of last season, each season is not in a vacuum divorced from what has come before.

Despite the EL win, last season was not a happy place and the fans expectations if anything have been reset to a higher point. There are those that felt that Ange had earnt another go at it and for them the current problems are obviously going to be given little time or sympathy, there are those that felt Ange should be fired for gross underachievement league wise and their expectations were for a rebuilt Spurs to actually challenge closer to the top of the table, again there is going to be little sympathy or room given by them for yet another manager unable to utilise his squad effectively. Then I think you do have to take into account this unrest is years in the making, years and years of poor squad building and poor managerial recruitment have left us as a fan base thats just largely unhappy with how we are run and the team will bear the brunt of that directly when the performances are so poor.

I don't think there is a solution to this other than winning games. Some will say playing better football will do it, but I think we are past that point now. The fans are not going to be happy playing great passing football that still results in losing 1-2 to Fulham at home. We need to win games at home as a minimum to win back the support of the fan base.

Good analysis and I share your views. I’ve been thinking the same in the sense that we were clearly a club on the up when Poch was here, we just didn’t have any tangible silverware to underpin that success and trophies are the main currency of success, notwithstanding the individual accolades that Kane and Son picked up along the way.

Not to mention we were sold the dream that the stadium would take us to the next level. Years of poor recruitment and no clear plan when it comes to picking the manager has set us back.

I honestly thought that night in Bilbao would improve the mood of the fanbase and I think it’s fair to say it did for a few months. I’ve come to the conclusion that we’ll only be happy as a fanbase if we’re competing at the right end of the table AND winning things. We almost got there with Poch. I think had we won that trophy in Ange’s first season it would have made him an incredibly popular figure.
