Kenny Jackett has joined our academy setup by the way, not sure what his role is exactly but he was on the sideline for our U18 game at Chelsea yesterday - where we lost 3-2 but put in a very good performance.

Interesting that a former manager would join an academy setup. Didn't he just leave Rotherham?

Alex Inglethorpe left a job as Exeter's first team manager to take over our U21s.

Kieran McKenna and Ledley King have been running the U18s, but McKenna moved to Man U a few months ago, so perhaps its an experienced hand to work alongside King?

I don't think Ledley has much if anything to do with the U18s, McDermott has taken over since McKenna and Gibbs left but Jackett might take that role now.

For Jackett it's local, and perhaps a medium-term appointment rather than increasingly short-term ones knocking around the lower leagues.

It might be that he is a better coach than manager, and this would be a useful appointment for all parties

I don't think Ledley has much if anything to do with the U18s, McDermott has taken over since McKenna and Gibbs left but Jackett might take that role now.

I doubt McDermott wants to be too much hands-on coaching, seeing as he got promoted to DoF and has much bigger responsibilities

Would love to see Peter Taylor back in some capacity I always thought he should have been involved with our youngsters. Last I heard he was at Dover or some where like that.

I think that Walkes still had half a chance of making it at PL or championship level - from what I've seen of him, his problem is working out what position he is. He's seemed a bit small to be a CB, but perhaps not mobile enough to be a full back; quite good on the ball so perhaps he could make it as a DM

Interestingly enough I have often been more impressed with Walkes than I have with Carter-Vickers.

Apparently Poch came out and confirmed that Walker-Peters wouldn't be involved with the first-team squad for the 'Boro game - anyone know how he's presently looking in terms of his status as a prospect and ability to deputise for either Walker or Rose?

He's now full-time with the first team, as is Edwards, so Poch clearly likes him but he also likes gradual integration meaning next season is when we'll probably start to see him - though I think with Edwards it's a little different and we'll see him soon during the Gent/Fulham/Gent run. KWP has always been one of the biggest prospects at the club and is by no means any less talented than the likes of Winks, Onomah and CCV, he's just a little behind physically but he should make it with a little patience.

Fair enough. Personally if he turns out to be a potential backup for Walker between now and August, I could see us moving Trippier on and transitioning KWP into that role full time. However, whether he does develop to that standard is something you'd be better at predicting, I'll wager.

I was just going to ask @Yoof what KWP's rise would mean for Tripper and Davies. I suppose Davies can be used as a centre back so we could keep Tripper and Davies for next season, but if Poch does sell one of them it would show he had total faith in KWP.

Personally, I think he's off come the summer given those circumstances - it's the last chance for us to extract maximum value from his contract (besides January 2018, anyway) in any sale, and he'll want to move on to become a guaranteed starter somewhere.

It would be a shame because I really like Davies, but my one complaint about Poch is that he does not rotate enough and I think he has someone in Davies that could play more often to give Rose a rest and when we play with a back 3 he would fit in well there. I do not think like your also hinting at that to much change at the back is good in one year. Wimmer is another I would have liked to see play a bit more often with dier more in midfield then at the back.

Our back up full backs are of quite good quality and if we have to bring through lesser experienced ones I think it will effect our performances especially when we get injuries as we no doubt will. I wonder if we could pick up a naybet type full back signing while KWP and I hope Sessegnon become a bit more experienced.

I know Poch is not a big fan of it but I still think a loan can do wonders for young players. Players for us who have had loans to prem teams early in the careers are Walker, Rose, Dier(everton) Kane and it did in my opinion them the power of good. I think Janssen would benefit from it as well.

Yeah, it's one thing I'm not sold on - giving our players first-team action elsewhere hasn't really done any of them much harm, at least from what we can see of their skills and ability to adapt to Poch's style of play. I get why Poch thinks sending players out is risky, but the reward outweighs the possible costs, imo.

Not for good technical players like we are producing now. Kane and Mason got kicked around and quickly injured every time Timmeh packed them off to lower league

You kinda invalidate what is a reasonable enough opinion when you make unfounded leaps in logic/make things up to back it up.


And besides one of the biggest areas in which youth players need to adapt to in first team football is the physical side of the game - Onomah won't make it for a lack of ability, it would be because he can't step up to the physicality of the league.

We can't wrap our young players up in cotton wool and expect them all to make the grade
