I think it's more that there are now a lot of very good level mid range sides who are not in Europe and can compete with the better sides who are in Europe - eg Fulham,Bournemouth, Brighton, Forest and are taking advantage of the bigger clubs having their squads stretched whereas in years gone by they weren't good/strong enough to do this.

I think by the end of the season those teams will be below the likes of us, but these teams will finish a lot closer to the European sides than in usual seasons....
