The Official 2024/25 Premier League Thread

As great a manager as he is, one of the greatest ever, if he does that his legacy is seriously tarnished as it’d show a major shortcoming in his ability to overcome the adversity that other greats did.

But, like you, I can see it too.

He’s only ever managed success. Looks ill. Can see him going and taking time out until the Spain job comes up (or until Michael O’Neill decides he’s had enough).

Will watch second half, haven't seen the 1st. But, what I've seen so far in recent weeks, it looks similar to the collapse that we had under Poch that I saw signs of in 2017/18 but really became pronounced in the last few months of 2018/19.

We just let that team decay and it went stale. Seemed the message stopped getting through and the energy dropped. The same thing has happened at City albeit not for the same reasons.

Be very interested to see if Pep can turn it around. He's a wonderful football manager but this is the first time he's been tested like this.
They need a total rebuild. 9 players over 30, another few 29, hard to play a pressing game with aging players. Also, after so much success a lot of those players probably don't have the same desire needed.

Haaland doesn't help either. He's a great goal scorer but this run shows how poor of a footballer he actually is.

What legacy can he claim to have if the one time he's not had the best or second best team he's folded.

Pundits have been sucking him off for years, but this is the first time he's actually had to manage and has no answers. And people wanna call Jose and Conte chequebook managers. I remember his Bayern team getting dismantled by Barca. One of the only time I can remember him having a weaker team (and not by much) than his opponent and he was exposed.

Klopp must be kicking himself

Klopp to City, just for Liverpool's tears.

I remember Guardiola saying after the Bayern gig that he couldn't see himself staying for too long at the same place because his demands on the players are such that they're not sustainable in the long run. If I remember correctly, then the question is rather: why did he stay so long at City?

He needed a much bigger turnover of players - particuarly in defense - but it gets harder and harder as you hoard some of the best in every position. Add to that Rodri's injury which turned out to be a huge blow for them and it paints a pretty bleak picture.

Ironically, I think Haaland's signing was the last nail in his coffin. One of Guardiola's strengths has always been his ability to tweak his system in order to integrate new players and get the best out of everyone, but in order to do that, you need versatile players. Haaland has to play as a center-forward and seriously limits his options. And if he's having a disappointing season (by his own standards, of course) on top of that...

It's weird how everyone tipped City to win again this year. Just before this poor streak started I remember when Arsenal dropped their first few points and pundits were saying you can't afford to drop too many points as City always get stronger as the season goes on etc.

Other than when they lost Rodri there wasn't a single pundit who even hinted that this could happen.

I wonder how long this run will go on for? I assume they will spend what they can in Jan to try and turn things around
