The Official 2022/23 Premier League Thread

No, I was referring to whichever merciless bloodshed was presumably required for her ancestors to get in to power.

Unusually, the House of Hanover, which Brenda was descended from, obtained the throne through the bloodless Act of Succession in 1714. Wars soon followed with the Jacobites to keep hold of it but the actual gaining was political rather than military.

Golf is on

This follows the immediate suspension of play on Thursday evening and the complete cancellation of all day’s play on Friday, both actions taken in memory of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and out of respect for the Royal Family.

The decision to restart on Saturday has been taken in accordance with Official National Mourning guidance and in consultation with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

The Wentworth event will give players, caddies, staff, volunteers and spectators the opportunity to come together across the weekend, not only to express their condolences but also to celebrate the extraordinary life of Her Majesty.

We join other sports in doing this, including the Men’s Test Match between England and South Africa at The Oval and the Women’s IT20 match between England and India in County Durham, Premiership Rugby Union, Rugby League and the Great North Run in the north east of England.

The second round of the BMW PGA Championship will resume at 6.40am on Saturday morning and all original second round tee times will remain the same. Those players who are yet to complete their first round will do so from 7.30am onwards from the place on the golf course where they stopped on Thursday afternoon.

The Rolex Series event will now be contested over 54 holes with the intention to finish on Sunday as scheduled. It is not possible to play the full 72 holes and finish on Monday as we cannot guarantee the staff, facilities or security of the venue on Monday due to the on-going plans for the state funeral.

Across the weekend at Wentworth, black ribbons will be made available for people to wear and flags will continue to fly at half-mast.

In addition, there will be a two minute silence at 9.50am on Saturday morning across the venue to commemorate the life of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, with the proclamation of King Charles III being shown on the television screens in the Championship Village from 10am

Minority sports outside the UK, the PL cannot afford to be shown up to its massive world audience.
They do not trust the fans to honour the minutes silence, no club, or sponsor will want report such as "fans at Emirates /eithad/" or what splashed all the world.

Not for cancelling games, but City instead of Leicester being postponed works out better for us. So silver lining.

I was thinking the same thing. City are in some form just now, Leicester floundering badly.

Postponement works for me. Instead of nervously watching Spurs on Saturday, I'll be nervously watching my tee shots.

This is a fair point on PR...BUT...at some point the matches are going to have to be played and all those who want to mar any minute's silence will get their chance eventually...

Don’t play this weekend or next and the world will have moved on, instead of a silence they'll do a clap, or ignore it.

Cl still going ahead, not heard anything about next weekend?

If matches get cancelled then no more Premier League until 1st October due to International fixtures. I expect they will want to postpone matches next weekend too as too close to the funeral plus policing difficulties for London fixtures.

Possible. But again it was up to each sport if they went ahead or not. Rugby is going ahead this weekend.

Each sport would, I imagine, have consultated the police though to see if they can still “police” the event.

i was initially annoyed at the postponements of football but this policing angle makes much more sense to me. London police in particular will be spread thin at other huge crowd events these 2 weeks.

My annoyance at the Leicester game being postponed would be heightened if other matches outside London go ahead leaving us disadvantaged by having to squeeze an extra game in.

There is the acknowledgement that losing one round of games is a headache in an already congested calendar but two would present acute challenges. Therefore, the league and the clubs would try to get away whichever matches they could next weekend, with the feeling being that a partially completed round would be better than no round at all.
