I've never understood why anyone makes a fuss about Baines, for every bit of good play there is lots of rubbish.
Townsend insists that, despite the doubters, England have enough quality to win the World Cup in the summer.
‘I think we’ve got a great chance of winning it,’ said Townsend.
‘We’ve done really well in the qualifiers and that’s given us a big confidence boost. We’ll be well prepared and I’m feeling good about our chances.’
Townsend might be one of the rookies in the squad with only a handful of caps to his name, but Roy Hodgson will be able to call on significant experience.
Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole and Wayne Rooney have hundreds of caps between them, and the Spurs man thinks they will be crucial in winning the title.
‘It’s hard to say exactly what qualities we need – it’s not really for me to say, but at the end of the day we have world class players with experience, and that helps,’ he added.
‘Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole – they’re all experienced and bring real quality to the table.
