He caressed Roger Johnson's chin after being tackled from behind. A bit harsh I would say, even if the rules probably state that you can't raise your hands or whatever.

Is that really a red?

What Cisse did had much less of a chance of causing injury than what Johnson did surely.

What Cisse did was very silly, but a surely a yellow would have sufficed? This game is going to be horrific from now, there will be more reds to come.

But the rule is stupid. Should Rosa Parkes not have sat down because rules are rules?

Clattenberg will now give everything QPR's way to attempt to even up which will end up in players getting frustrated by blatantly incorrect refereeing leading to reckless challenges fights frustrations.

lol never thought id see her name in the midweek/weekend thread

Robert Huth sent off now. Bad lunge and without seeing a replay I can see what it was given.

Though with the reply, he's pulled out of the challenge. Sliding on the snow didn't help.

Not really, the rules are what the referee is given, as each referee's common sense is different it makes much more sense for them to follow the rules as stated by the fa/fifa.

Rules should be the guide. A referee should use his best judgement given the whole situation to come to a suitable punishment. Football isn't as black and white as a rule book.

This 'best judgement' argument is why referees are considered to be inconsistent, because their best judgements are all different.

Either you have a set of rules they all stick to and you get consistency, or each referee make their best judgement and they all call things entirely differently.

Because that doesn't happen already? Referees are so inconsistent but I'd rather they do it whilst using common sense.

Given the difference in common sense between someone like Foy compared, well, pretty much anyone, that's a sure recipe for disaster.

It does happen, but surely the aim is to minimise it.

Sorry, I disagree. I think you need common sense in football. It's such an emotional game with so much at stake. If someone comes in and does his best to injure you, you're supposed to just take it? I understand you can't retaliate, but from what I've heard of the incident it wasn't anything too serious. He's potentially ruined the game now, when a booking for both players would have been the better option.

It's not the referees fault that Cisse has reacted like he has, it is only Cisse's fault. He might argue that it is harsh, and i won't disagree with that. What i will say is that if Cisse doesn't put his hands up to someones face he never forces the referee to make the decision.

The other point is that are referees there to make sure the game is good to watch? No. they are there to referee the game, what is good to watch for the spectators and not good to watch should have little to do with it.

Huth's red perhaps also a bit harsh, but he did come in quite recklessly there. Probably pulled out of it in the last second though and that should perhaps have saved him. On the other hand, the Sunderland player had to jump to get away. Orange card, I would say :p

Regarding the Cisse incident, I do think it is a paradox that Cisse gets sent off for something which is obviously much less dangerous than what Johnson did initially and got a yellow for. Surely, that can't be right. If it is an automatic red when you raise your hands, I find that wrong. It is obviously a big difference between punching someone and giving someone a grandma-esque pinch of the cheek like Cisse did in this case.
