The Goon Thread

Nor me. In fact as stated above we would be six points worse off had we lost to Arsenal. 51 to their 53 and they would have the game in hand. So the Arsenal victory means a hell of a lot!

Correct. The win over Arsenal gave us a chance, a defeat and we wouldnt even have a sniff.

Similar to last season, even though we were 7pts ahead of Arsenal with 10 games left, and bearing in mind 2 of those were Liverpool and Chelsea away, the win in the NLD just meant to me we were basically 1pt ahead with 8 left with anything gained from those 2 matches as a bonus.
With yesterdays defeat the only way to get back on track is to win at Chelsea. A win at Swansea only cancels out Arsenals win on Saturday.
As Spurs wins at Chelsea are about as common as rocking horse sh#t in recent times, we need a favour from somebody now, doubt it will be from Reading or Wigan, but uncannily Arsenal have Fulham,Norwich and QPR to play, so fingers crossed one of our 'old boys' may come to the rescue

I'm sorry guys but I'm just not convinced we are going to fall away while Arsenal are suddenly going to hit the title winning form that they haven't managed all season.

We have to beat Swansea, Everton, City, Chelsea and all the others? So fudging what? We can do it!

As I said in another thread, yesterday was a bizarrely bad performance but if we, as one of the top 5 teams in the country, are capable of stooping to that level, then so are Arsenal. Even when they were apparently steam rollering teams last season to overtake us they lost to Wigan at home as well as drawing 3-3 with Norwich. I think in the Fulham game we were carrying a lot of injuries and collectively the team didn't look like they knew how to string two passes together. But that's not really us. We can recover and I'm not throwing in the towel just yet.

And actually, even if we don't make top 4 I don't actually see it being the disaster that people think it will. We have a good squad and next year I think we can go for a title challenge because we will have an entire season of AVB without the initial bedding in period that cost of a few games at the start of this season.

Our defence is excellent, and I think matches up to anyone in else's in the league. I understand Walker's been a bit shaky but it can happen to a young player and next season he will improve, because he has potential.

In midfield, we are also really strong. There is a clear lack of the specific type of player that you'd think AVB would want, and therefore there will be space to go and get them into the squad. But Sandro, Dembele, Lennon, Sigurdsson, Holtby etc along with additions is very strong.

Upfront, we obviously need work and I'm convinced we will. I'm certain we will keep Bale, and we will bring a quality striker in. It will be annoying to miss out on CL but in terms of the overall progress of the club, I don't think it will hinder us too much. Because year on year we can keep improving, and there's only so many players the clubs above us can sign before we can catch up. Same reason I think Liverpool will also be a bigger threat next year, they will be able to sign good players and add them to their squad, and there's only so many the likes of us can sign before we simply don't have any more room.

The other thing is that I think AVB, as well as the bedding in period in terms of tactics and match preparation methods, also had to handle the squad transition well to keep the entirety of the members onside. So he hasn't just shifted out the likes of Friedel, Gallas, Defoe etc and has tweaked his ideal system to suit them even. This summer, because he has 'bought' the authority of the squad by carefully implementing his ideas and handling the transition, he will have a lot more freedom to move out the players he doesn't want, and bring in the ones he does.

And let's not forget that even if we don't get top 4, not many people were really expecting it before the start of the year. I was saying I'd be happy with top 6 because this was a season of transition. We've done very well so far, better than expected. And I still don't think the fight with Arsenal is over yet. But if we fall just short, we don't have to be too down-heartened. We will still keep progressing as a club and I think we have the right people in place to make that happen.

Very inspiring and a good fell post.
Hope we can do it. [-o<

Jack Wheelchair has been ruled out for six more weeks in a savage blow to Arsenal's top-four hopes, Goal.com can reveal.

The midfielder is facing an uphill battle to play again this season after his ankle injury was assessed by a specialist in Dubai last week and, then, again when he returned to the club.

Goal.com understands that Wheelchair has been told he needs an enforced spell of rest that will keep him on the sidelines for a minimum of six more weeks, until at least the start of May.

Although there is a slim possibility that he could return for the last three Premier League fixtures and the end-of-season internationals, privately Arsenal do not expect their most influential player to feature again for club or country this season.

Arsene Wenger gave mixed messages on Wheelchair’s condition last week, initially claiming that the 21-year-old had an inflamed left ankle, before admitting in a second media bulletin that he had problems with both his ankles.

Despite Wenger publicly playing down the problem, it is understood that the principal damage is to Wheelchair’s right ankle, and that he is suffering a recurrence of the same injury that contributed to him missing 16 months of competitive football.

There are no plans at this stage for the midfielder to undergo a repeat of the surgery he had in September 2011 to repair a fracture to his right ankle, which had first been sustained in a pre-season friendly two months earlier. He later suffered heel and knee injuries and did not play competitive football again until October 27 of last year.

Wheelchair sustained the latest injury to his right ankle against Tottenham in the north London derby 15 days ago and was sent to the warmth of Dubai for a week to rest.

The manager said England and Arsenal’s talisman had been withdrawn from action on the orders of a specialist amid fears he could suffer a stress fracture if he carried on playing.

Speaking as he ruled Wheelchair out for up to four weeks ahead of the Champions League clash at Bayern Munich last week, Wenger said: “Maybe I overplayed him, but only in the last two games. It's difficult to rest him because he's a winner and when I ask how he feels, he says ‘perfect’. We do a regular scan and it showed bone bruising on the heel of his right foot.

“He had some inflammation where he had the surgery and he has been compensating to protect his left ankle. Every month he has scans on both ankles, but he feels no pain.

“The last time we let him carry on and it turned into a stress fracture, which is why the specialist said we cannot take this gamble.”

Arsenal’s fears that Wheelchair had suffered serious damage have been realised following the latest medical assessment and the player is not expected to feature in the forthcoming league fixtures against Reading, West Brom, Norwich, Everton, Fulham and Manchester United.

The club's top-four hopes remain on a knife-edge, despite a weekend in which their win at Swansea City and Tottenham's defeat to Fulham helped them narrow the gap on their north London rivals to four points with a game in hand.

Wheelchair could be rushed back for the final matches of the campaign against QPR, Wigan Athletic and Saudi Sportswashing Machine but that is believed to be unlikely at this stage.

Furthermore, there is little prospect of Wheelchair being made available for England’s end-of-season friendlies. Roy Hodgson’s team play the Republic of Ireland at Wembley on May 29 before a glamour friendly in Brazil on June 2

watched Arse against Swansea on Sat and they are poor. Swansea were worse, in fact shockingly bad, but Arse are not the potent attacking threat of years gone by.

somehow as always they will sneak into the top 4, will finish above us as always, with this team i really dont know how but call it fate or jamminess take your pick.

So its down to us and Chelsea imo.....whoever gets knocked out of the EL first will have the edge in the Premier League i think

Yeah, Swansea really annoyed me on Saturday. I was watching that game and for the first 20 minutes they looked excellent. Their passing was crisp, their movement was superb. And then for some reason it all went to brick, they started tying to force the ball where it couldn't really go and seemed to have no idea what to do. It's not as if Arsenal were that much better, but it was like Swansea just gave up. I would like to say it bodes well for our visit there but what's the betting they've remembered how to play like they can in time for our visit and give us a much tougher game?

I read on here about how good AFC were, then when i saw some of the ratings in the press for their players today they were 5s and 6s, not that good but good enough to win it seems

Arsenal are mediocre. They have a system that guarantees them success over the course of the season, they eke out lots of 1 goal wins and then leather the really brick teams for 5 or 6.

This is conducive to success though, and it's something I thought we had got going on this year. The art of controlling a game and getting the win through possession and compact defending even when you play quite poorly. The unusual systems of late have not helped, hopefully this consistent edging of games will return with Lennon and a bit of normalcy in terms of team set-up.

We have a better squad than them, which is why we're (still) above them. We just need to keep up the consistency that they so often exhibit throughout the season.

Another one would pop up in it's place within two-three months.

I dunno, surely this season will turn the rest of them onto that which us lifers understand, the universe will not allow us to finish above them, it will never happen again, ever. This thread is irrelevant because it is impossible, there never has been any reason to laugh at them, and there never will be.

I laugh at them for so many reasons other than us being above them, too many to write here. I would be here all night.

My main reason however is that we are on an upward curve, or at least a plateau. Every season they get worse and worse, since about 2004. Further and further from a trophy.

They forfeit the cup competitions that they can actually win, formerly through playing kids, but now they actually field quite strong teams and still their spinelessness lets them get beaten by brick like Bradford and Blackburn.

Then they try valliantly in the CL, but the gulf in class is eventually made evident every year, and it grows with each passing season. In 2006 they actually got to the final and now that is a mere dream - in the last two seasons they have gotten spanked so hard in the first leg of their final tie that their opponents have actually given up in the second leg and let them come back into it.

Finally in the league they have absolutely zero chance of winning it, so instead they are content with finishing in the top four so much that Wenger has even branded this in itself as a trophy. They pride themselves on qualifying consistently for the CL, and consistently getting out of their group (even if they finish second to teams like Shakhtar), but what is ridiculous is that they put all their pride in a competition that they will never win.

Being a present day Arsenal fan is generally an exercise in delusion. Slowly Arsenal fans are becoming Liverpool fans, and although they don't use the word 'history' as much, that is essentially all they have left to talk about. If you can't see the humour in that then I feel sorry for you!

Basically this thread needs to stay. Everyone needs to laugh at Arsenal. Every fan of every club. They are a joke.

Good place to vent hatred as well.
