The General Transfer Rumours and Speculation Thread

Apparently Middlesboro are close to signing Praet from Anderlecht (fee around 10 million), though some are rubbishing the story. Sevilla interested, but Monchi won't/can't pay what's being asked (future clauses). Lots of other PL clubs being mentioned as well including Liverpool (fee now suddenly 22.3 million o_O).

Seems like it's gonna be a boring window until the Euro's are done with. I get the impression that most players are now going to be concentrating completely on said tournament.

And a lot of clubs, agents and players will hope for a big payday on the back of a good Euro performance from a player.

And players not involved in the Euros or Copa America might be waiting for bigger clubs who may or may not make their move until after the international tournaments start wrapping up and they figure out who they can get.

No doubt good business can be done now already, but a lot of good business will have to wait. Luckily we're in a very strong position and not desperate.

Right, but that hasn't prevented several clubs from moving early, often for players very much involved in the Euros or the Copa America. Off the top of my head, Bayern with Hummels and Sanches, BVB with Dembele, Arsenal with Xhaka, Leverkusen with Volland and Baumgartlinger, Roma for Gerson, Salah, Rudiger and Alisson....

....there is definitely good business to be done now. Of course, it's harder to do so with a tournament about to start, but that's the case every two years, and should be factored into any club's transfer planning by now.

Personally, I'm interested to see if the Dutch players (particularly the ones in the Eredivisie, but also ones based in foreign leagues like Strootman, Memphis et al) prove more amenable to moving early than their counterparts involved with the Euros - beyond these exhibition friendlies they're currently playing, they have nothing else to tie them down for the entirety of the summer, and I'm not as convinced about the theory that they'd prefer to wait for bigger clubs who are busy salivating over the Euros to make their move after the tournament's concluded.

Not so sure about nicking another Southampton person.
Thier fans seem to think we're the club taking their players. ..Poch off course and going back Bale, who nearly didn't,t make it but we stuck with him and came good..too good.
Anyway I would be surprised if Southampton were to let us dismantle anymore of their staff!

And it hasn't prevented us from moving early in the past either. That's kind of my point. I don't quite get if you're questioning if the international tournaments are factored into our transfer planning or not, but if you are I'm struggling for words.

People see a "lot of signings" elsewhere and get upset that we don't move earlier for players. When the reason why there's "a lot of signings" elsewhere is because there are a hell of a lot more clubs that are not Tottenham.

Even when we sign 1 or 2 players early and then some players late (as we often do) you get posters getting upset that we didn't move for more players early on. Even though the clubs we can be compared to haven't really done more of their business early.

It's not just the players that wait for the Euros to finish. We might be waiting too. You mention Strootman, but he's a player with 6 starts in total over the last two seasons with some massive injury problems along the way. Perhaps we prefer Bender, but if Bender won't move until after the Euros we have to wait if he's our primary target. Should we move for Strootman early just to get the deal done early, or should we wait for our primary target to perhaps become available? It's easy to scream "get our business done early", but as a transfer strategy that is too simplistic.

Finally I think the importance of "getting your business done early" gets overstated. There is a value to it, I agree. But it's not huge. There have been some immediate hits with players signed early in the window like Alderweireld, but there's also been some flops like Paulinho. Just like some players have been huge hits almost immediately when signed late and others have taken their time to fit in or not fit in at all.
