The French Football Thread

interesting one

Goethals obviously did well there, and they have had some managerial giants, the likes of Beckenbauer, Bielsa, and AVB, but you'd think he could have landed higher, a bigger club than Brighton in many ways, but its quite the step down in leagues

Marseille are a far bigger club than Brighton. 🤣🤣🤣

You might consider it a step down in leagues but the French is still a good league to manage in and Marseille are literal sleeping giants. It's an opportunity for him to maybe reawaken them and further enhance his coaching reputation.

Weren't FSG trying to buy them for their new multi club setup?

All French clubs are selling clubs except one and that's basically how they fund themselves, but to no longer have any say... I think I'd rather go bankrupt than become the permanent feeder club for someone.

They've made messes of their tv deals the last 5 years. Surprised more clubs haven't gone under.

There was a youtube vid about the mess at Bordeaux. Can't remember the details. Didn't they build a new stadium their fans couldn't get to or something?

It's their financial troubles FSG wanted to take advantage of. They'd be getting a sleeping giant (by French standards) and a talent factory on the cheap.

Those types of companies are always on the lookout for a distressed asset. How they bought liverpool.
