The Europa League - Sh1t got real...

Re: The Europa League - brick got real...

Now if only they could get rid of the 3rd place losers from the group stage of the CL.

Re: The Europa League - brick got real...

Changes suits a team like Arsenal better :)... struggling for 4th and unable to win CL.

Re: The Europa League - brick got real...

Gibraltar voted in as 54th member of UEFA.

I currently live a stones throw across the border in Spain and this is massive news.

Just 30,000 population, but sports obsessed (nice climate, not much else to do) particularly kids sports. The national team is mostly ageing amateurs but recently beat San Marino 7-5 (!) and Faroe Islands 3-0.

If Gibraltar were admitted then Spain threatened to withdraw its national team from the WC and Euros and Real Madrid and Barcelona from the CL… hopefully they will then Bale might be encouraged to stay :)

Re: The Europa League - brick got real...

Worth adding that originally UEFA rejected their membership (has been 20 years of rejections actually), and rumour is that Spanish bribes and threats were 100% responsible for this. However, Gibraltar took legal action at the Court of Arbitration for Sport and it was passed.

_Another_ example of how rotten UEFA is though.

Re: Europa league in vogue

Why don't Spain want Gibralter in?

Gibraltar used to be part of Spain (its on the very South coast just a few miles north of Africa) but was handed over to the British around 300 years ago.

Spain still claim its theirs, but really it seems to be just a pawn whenever they want something. Some fun recent events included the Spanish deliberately and slowly checking every car / person passing through meaning it took 6 hours to cross the border. Then Gibraltar projected a massive image of the queen on the "Rock" during the jubilee which didn't go down well 1 mile away in Spain.

From my perspective Spain seem to do politics like they play football…whine, cheat, complain to everyone :)
The people themselves are very friendly though.

Re: The Europa League - brick got real...

Would we have qualified for the CL both this season and last season if these rules had already been in place?

Wouldn't you just know it. They open the door only AFTER we have been cheated out of qualification, like they needed to wait for us to be the victim of a brick system before sorting it out.

No point in getting our hopes up though. The top three places are locked in imo and with Arse loaded reviving and victims getting their act together, what's the betting we still wind up losing out by some statistical freak or other on the last day of the season.

We are Spurs, that's what happens to us. :frown:

Needed to get that off me chest.

That really just rubs salt in the wounds :-&

Levy should hire Jean-Louis Dupont to sue UEFA for the £60m of revenue we missed out on!
