Whitewash incoming. They hardly play Red ball cricket anymore in England . It’s all 50 overs and less . The Red ball stuff is at start and end of season.

Not that the centrally contracted players play much county stuff but in terms of producing the next line of test players the need to play long format more.

Another issue is that does not put bums on seats. So they lean to the short formats . Vicious circle .
 
I went to day one and two of the Melbourne test. Day one was all the Aussies. Day two we fought our way back into it thanks to an amazing spell from Anderson, only for the batsmen to capitulate in the last half hour and then finally on day 3 first hour. Pathetic end to a pathetic series by the English. No positives to take from this tour. Whitewash inevitable. Here's a nice pic of the MCG on boxing day though. Great stadium.

As @awesome dawson suggests, even the enjoyment for Australia, let alone a neutral is spoiled by such a one sided victory.

I don’t expect much to change in the final two tests, there seems to be a stubbornness along the lines of trying to dictate a way of playing the same way for any occasion / opponent or surface. Perhaps an extended loyalty to some members of the team too.

I’m not familiar enough with the county game any more to chuck some names into the mix and although we’ve been whitewashed before it does feel like the county game is further away form producing test batsmen than it ever has been. Especially openers which has the knock in effect of exposing the middle order too early for their specialism.

What changes can we make to the county game to make it more relevant both to audiences and as a breeding ground for batting technique? Can we have less games or a different format to make each game have more relevance, potentially attracting a wider audience? Maybe smaller leagues with a play off style match for the winning teams played on tv? Incentives for opening batsman to score team points or even individual runs by the number of balls they face? Extensions given to weather delays so matches have more chance of running their natural course? Barry Hearn being consulted about how we can add some exposure to the format to attract audiences?! Or is it just going to be something that is lost due to the number of competing shorter form activities that the younger generation have and the commercialisation of sport that will just continue to expand the coverage and number of matches played for those that attract the largest global tv audience?

Interested to hear some thoughts on this, I’d always hoped to take in away test tours as part of my retirement plans, but by the time that happens I wonder if the format will even exist!
