Cricket Australia says it welcomes any "new information" about the sandpaper ball-tampering scandal, after batsman Cameron Bancroft suggested some bowlers were aware of the plot.

Bancroft was banned for nine months by CA for his part in a plan to tamper with the ball using sandpaper in a Test in South Africa in 2018.

Former captain Steve Smith and David Warner were banned for a year.

CA's investigation cleared all other players and staff.

Asked in interview with the Guardian if some Australia bowlers knew of the plan, Bancroft said: "It's pretty probably self-explanatory."

CA's investigation confirmed opener Bancroft used sandpaper to damage the ball during the third Test in Cape Town. Television footage showed him hiding the sandpaper down his trousers.

CA found Smith and Bancroft had made "misleading public comments" after they initially claimed yellow tape was used.

"All I wanted to do was to be responsible and accountable for my own actions and part," 28-year-old Bancroft said.

"Obviously what I did benefits bowlers and the awareness around that, probably, is self-explanatory.

"I guess one thing I learned through the journey and being responsible is that's where the buck stops [with Bancroft himself].

"Had I had better awareness I would have made a much better decision."

In response to Bancroft's comments, CA said in a statement that it has "maintained all along that if anyone is in possession of new information in regards to the Cape Town Test of 2018 they should come forward and present it".

It added: "The investigation conducted at the time was detailed and comprehensive. Since then, no-one has presented new information to CA that casts doubt on the investigation's findings."

At the time, CA said: "It appears to be an isolated incident but if there are other allegations we will take them further."

CA concluded coach Darren Lehmann was not involved in the controversy, but he resigned at the end of that series in South Africa.

CA chief executive James Sutherland announced he would step down in June 2018 after 17 years in the role.

An independent report in October 2018 concluded that CA was partly to blame for the scandal and condemned a "winning without counting the costs" culture in Australian cricket.

Smith was stripped of the captaincy and he and Bancroft, who is playing for Durham this summer, were suspended from captaining Australia for at least the next two years.

Former vice-captain Warner will not be considered for any team leadership positions for the rest of his international career.

Wicketkeeper Tim Paine replaced Smith as Test captain, while opener Aaron Finch is their one-day and Twenty20 skipper.

Smith and Warner returned to Australia duty against Afghanistan at the 2019 World Cup, while Bancroft returned for the first Test of the Ashes against England later that year.

Uncapped Gloucestershire batsman James Bracey and Sussex seamer Ollie Robinson have been included in England's 15-man squad for two Tests against New Zealand, which begin on 2 June.

There is also a recall for Somerset's Craig Overton, who last played in 2019.

Jos Buttler, Chris Woakes, Sam Curran, Moeen Ali and Jonny Bairstow have been left out after only recently returning from the Indian Premier League.

Ben Stokes (broken finger) and Jofra Archer (elbow injury) are also absent.

Opener Dom Sibley, who has missed recent Warwickshire games with a fractured finger, has been included, as has Rory Burns, who was dropped for the final two Tests in England's 3-1 series defeat in India over the winter.

Jack Leach is the sole spinner in the squad, with Dom Bess left out, while Ben Foakes is set to keep in England for the first time in Buttler's absence.

Squad: Joe Root (Yorkshire), James Anderson (Lancashire), James Bracey (Gloucestershire), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), Rory Burns (Surrey), Zak Crawley (Kent), Ben Foakes (Surrey), Dan Lawrence (Essex), Jack Leach (Somerset), Craig Overton (Somerset), Ollie Pope (Surrey), Ollie Robinson (Sussex), Dom Sibley (Warwickshire), Olly Stone (Warwickshire), Mark Wood (Durham).

Bracey, 24, was a reserve in the England squad for last summer's Tests against West Indies and Pakistan and last winter in Sri Lanka and India.

He is a top-order wicketkeeper-batsman and averages 37 in 44 first-class games for Gloucestershire. This season, the left-hander has scored 478 runs in 10 innings, with one century and four fifties.

Right-arm pace bowler Robinson, 27, was named in England squads last summer but is yet to feature, and toured as a reserve last winter.

He has taken 279 first-class wickets at an average of 21.04, and has claimed 29 scalps at 14.72 for Sussex this season, including taking 9-72 in the second innings against Glamorgan in April.

Overton has played four Tests, three against Australia, taking nine wickets at an average of 44.77.

England men's head coach Chris Silverwood said: "James Bracey and Ollie Robinson deserve their call-ups to the Test squad.

"They have been consistent performers in the County Championship this season and over the past 18 months, have excelled for the Lions on the field and in the various camps they have been involved in."

Silverwood, who is now also responsible for selection following the departure of Ed Smith, said Overton and Robinson are "realistically" competing for one spot, and they are "very difficult to split".

He also said the players involved in the IPL will play some County Championship or Vitality Blast fixtures before returning to the England fold, while Stokes could return for Durham in the Blast.

  1. England have added Haseeb Hameed and Sam Billings to their squad for the Test series against New Zealand after Ben Foakes was ruled out by a freak injury.

Foakes was set to play his first Test in home conditions next month at Lord's after fellow wicketkeepers Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow - along with Moeen Ali, Sam Curran and Chris Woakes - were rested for the series following their stints in the IPL.

But the 28-year-old will now miss his chance after slipping in the dressing room after Surrey's LV= Insurance County Championship fixture against Middlesex at the Kia Oval and tearing his left hamstring.

Foakes' absence increases the likelihood of Gloucestershire wicketkeeper-batsman James Bracey making his international debut next Wednesday when coverage of the first Test begins live on Sky Sports Cricket at 10am.

Kent's wicketkeeper-batsman Sam Billings - also uncapped at Test level - has been called up as cover with the squad growing from 15 players to 16 following the further addition of in-form Hameed

The opener has caught the eye this season, finding a new lease of life at Nottinghamshire after leaving Lancashire in 2019

The 24-year-old has scored 474 runs at an average of 52.66 and offers England another option at the top of an order where Rory Burns, Dom Sibley, Zak Crawley and Bracey are already vying for places.

Hameed has three Test appearances to his name but has not played for England since November 2016, his form dipping dramatically for Lancashire in the intervening period.

Hameed will play for Nottinghamshire in this week's LV= Insurance County Championship match against Warwickshire at Edgbaston, which starts on Thursday, before joining up with the England team at their base in London on Sunday night

England Men's Test Squad: Joe Root - Captain, James Anderson, Sam Billings, James Bracey, Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Zak Crawley, Haseeb Hameed, Dan Lawrence, Jack Leach, Craig Overton, Ollie Pope, Ollie Robinson, Dom Sibley, Olly Stone, Mark Wood

  2. I'm glad Hameed has got another chance, he started his career so well then took a massive nose dive

Devon Conway, what a good batsman this New Zealand/*South African guy looks a cut above imho
Yeah I saw a doco where they were mentioning the high hopes they had for him before this tour. Hopefully he’s not going to turn into their Steve Smith as I thought we bowled well overall.
Hopefully we can get a solid start again tomorrow, feels like a challenging score hinges on Root anchoring the innings.

We still have Pope, Lawrence and the highly rated Bracey to come next
All very very good

Has years of being an England and Spurs fan not taught you anything about the perils of optimism!
I’ll temper it by saying I do like the look of Pope, Lawrence has to show some test temperament though and Bracey is a complete unknown at this level!

just a shame we didn’t have the confidence to reciprocate.

what’s more annoying is there have been plenty of times when our batsman have played like they are chasing a 1 day game rather than bedding in for the long haul!

If Butler, Bairstow and Stokes were in the side it would have been on, but with inexperienced batsmen playing for their future it was unlikely. Plus everyone would have jumped all over them for losing if they had.
