The case for the defence

2 of the teams we played are tipped to be relegated though.
City played Ipswich and Chelsea …both sides with managers who had never managed at this level and one who is a favourite to get relegated
It’s about chances you concede right?

Yes and city had the least chances conceded of anyone.

Ours were low but against 2 teams expected to be relegated or fighting relegation. They'd be expected to be low. If we are still 4th in that table after the next 3 games I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Yep
And city have conceded chances against relegation fodder
It’s why the stats mean nothing until a much bigger sample size

Thought it may be worth collating the calamities back in one relevant thread
Seeing this back you can see Romero offload Welkbeck to Porro I assume … who is marking no one…. And his man is behind him free

Quite scary

It's been happening for a long time...i'm not sure Ange actually knows how to coach defending. Even the little highlights i saw ve Ferencvaros, i saw our defence ball watching and not watching where the runners were going. Total lack of defensive awareness seems o be a general theme under Ange, hence the very low number of clean sheets, even in games we dominate.

We have been like this for a long long time
It’s not a new thing imo

At some point you have to ask what the manager is doing to make this happen less. It is the manager's responsibility to stop it happening so often, we SHOULD be seeing progress on that front

We have been seeing progress
We had the second best defence in the league up to yesterday
Weirdly United now have the keeper with the most clean sheets
But… that doesn’t excuse yesterday
How often is it happening under Ange?

Very often. How many games can you recall that we look solid the whole game where Vicario rarely has to make a worldie?

Do you think Ange tells the defenders to watch the ball?
They aren’t following any instructions at this point they are thinking about what’s for dinner.

What instructions? Apart from press, or play high and let Micky outrun the attacker, is there any?
The way the defenders stand and their body shape compared to the better teams tell me they don't get that much defensive coaching.

That’s his job
Every team has keepers make great saves
Look at Reya and the plaudits he has been getting with a team set up to defend ..
That’s the job

Romero should be at the stage that he doesn't need to be told to mark the forward in the box. A schoolboy defender would know that.

Perhaps. You would think he's be ripe for being dropped....however, wuld things change? I'm starting to think not and even if we had prime Nesta and Maldini, our defensive shortcomings will continue.

Personnel-wise this defence is better than what Conte had to work with but yet we are getting much worse out of them.

Yes, it's also the job of the team (and the manager) to keep that to a minimum, to make it a rarity..
They scored with their first shot on target
That because a player fudged up and didn’t clear a ball
It’s a simple error and not a coaching one IMO
Romero switching off is a worry as it’s recurring

That might have something to do with Conte having 10 players defending. There needs to be a balance.

We can always point to player error...but how long do we keep on puting these down to player error and not coaching? It's not like such errors are a one-off.

Similarly, why is Romero continually doing this and still getting picked?
