The Case for the Attacking play

Teams aren’t scared of us at all

And why should they be. We take an age to get the ball out of our half and when the forwards do eventually get it, well, they’re crap so more often than not they won’t do anything with it unless it’s Kudus. I honestly think our forwards are bottom half quality and that’s being polite.

I think it’s massively about tactics and intent
You could have Kane and son up top and it would be like the football under clame but still so so basic

Kane and Son could still get you a goal out of nothing. No chance of that from our forwards. Our forwards are crap. We scored loads under Ange because of his gung ho tactics.

But that’s because they are world class players
They are rare and there really aren’t many anymore
So your manager has to adapt to what he has
That’s his job
If fans think we will only look good when we have better players then what is the point of a coach

Fair point about coaching. A good coach should make players better. But there will be limitations with the forwards we have because they are just not very good.

Ange got us playing attacking football all at all costs
Frank has is playing defensive football at all costs
The coaches should adapt
That’s as true for Ange and he lost his job because of it

Just don't think any sort of pragmatic manager will ever work at this club, it just doesn't fit with our fans or seemingly the players in the long run. Really hoping Frank can turn this around because right now what we are seeing is the concerns I expressed from the start.

As has been said already, he's not at Brentford this club is a different kettle of fish - from the expectations of the fans (and ultimately patience) to how teams will come and setup against us it is all so different. I hope Frank is a quick learner because otherwise this will not end up being pretty....
There is no reason he can't be a success but he needs to adapt and not necessarily change stuff for no reason. I'm still trying to understand why Bergvall is no longer centre mid

Manager in the video has a attacking philosophy and set the team up to go forward and they frequently done the same brick. If an attacking manager struggled to get Tottenham to play offensively maybe it's more than simply the tactics.

I don’t want attacking play
I want a balance
We’re getting veg with no trimmings
My missus is a master of the Sunday roast but no cheese sauce is a failure
I expect it because she does it well… and I know that because historically she showed me that … that’s partly why I married her
If you show what good is… you can’t then just be brick an expect compliments

I dont know whats more worrying, the comparison between A Sunday roast and attacking football or the fact you married your wife because she cooks a decent yorkshire pudding.

We have had like 7(?) managers since Poccetino I refuse to believe all these managers are clueless idiots. It is the same as Man U all the coaches they have been through are not useless managers. It's the quality of players!

The players are professionals they should know how to pass the ball or cross the ball to a Spurs player or put three passes together to create an attack without a manager.

If Romero, VdV are out the team will fall apart! And if Kudus is out the rest of the attack is just not good enough, Palhinha out and teams will cut through us in the middle.

This match VdV and Kudus both had stinkers and Romero was on the bench, then it will look like this.

Frank cannot teach Porro how to pass the ball 5m or tell Brennan to dribble a defender, they should know how to do that at this level!
It's obviously a mix of issues with the system and with limitations of the players.

There are real shortcomings in terms of technical quality to progress the ball well under pressure at the back and in midfield. Particularly when Romero is out and Porro is having an off day (I'm assuming it's a result of him playing a hell of a lot).

But it's also the case that the system so far is very much handbrake on. Weighted quite heavily towards avoiding risks, playing it simple, being in position to stop a counter attack if we lose it.

Agree with that, it also does not help when we use Spence at LB who can not use his left foot in play.

This phrase of "Too easy to lock off" makes a lot of sense i.e. the opposition lock us onto one side of the pitch. We can't come back inside because Bentancur/Palhinha don't really want the ball, so we just have to ping it down the line and hope someone can receive it whilst being fouled from behind.

OR we horseshoe around the back and try the other flank.

That whole idea/system is flawed. We need to have SOME threat through the middle.

Ange went too far (IMO) and had the full backs trying to play striker, and forced every single pass to go forwards. But Frank is doing almost the opposite. There must be some middle ground where we can "often" go forwards and can "often" travel through the middle of the pitch, else we are playing with both hands tied behind our backs.

Don't get me started on our defenders trying to defend with both hands behind their back...

Maddison was out loads under Ange
We have added kudus on the right which imo is an equivalence to kulu
If we need everyone fit we have the wrong guy in charge
I can’t be bothered to get the numbers up but Maddison, Kulu, Solanke all played a lot for Ange last season despite injuries. Maddison had over 20 goal contributions alone. And you’ve lost a goal getter in Son and replaced him with Kudus (who may come good on goals but not yet).

He’s also had to play a defensive inverted left back and no width from the position.

We’ve had about 15 games and 3 of our forward additions have managed about 1 goal and 1 assist between them. Maybe you can blame Frank for that but I’m not sure.

I do think Frank needs to find a way to get us on the front foot and playing some better stuff but he also deserves some time with the above better players at his disposal.

The forwards haven’t scored
But then they haven’t had passes either
I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve time but I will say he is already showing that he hasn’t worked out how to play with the tools he has yet
You rightly mention the left back issue so he should adapt to what he has
Square pegs dont fit round holes
What is key for Frank and ange is the team gets more points when the first choice defence is available. We defend better but we also create more chances
That’s a functional issue though because it means take one out and we’re broken
I think Destiny and Cuti are the two players most important for us
One for balance on the left and the the because he is the only one to pass forward

Agree with that, it also does not help when we use Spence at LB who can not use his left foot in play.
I agree. Udogie getting fully fit and staying fit would help. Could also give us the chance to give Porro a slight rest, he looks in need of one.

But I also think there are solutions and adjustments that are possible with that. Drop Palhinha back in buildup, make a back three with VdV who does have a good left foot wider opening options. Spence could then either move higher and wide, being the player who receives the ball in those areas, situations he's quite good at and comfortable with. Or have Spence invert into midfield, another role he's shown himself comfortable in.

All solutions I can think of requires a more "risky" positioning though. Making us less solid defensively when we lose the ball. That's something Frank has been unwilling to do, prioritising defensive organisation.

I guess we can hope that Romero, Udogie, Porro and Kudus stay fit. And maybe Simons can settle in. And Solanke and Kulusevski return to not just fitness, but also sharpness quickly. That's a lot to hope for though.
