Tactics Thread

So Jose is gone, while we are at idle speculation

What's your team look like now, how do we play

- 4-2-3-1 still? something else
- Press/possession/counter?
- What's your attacking play/pattern?
4-2-3-1

Out of possession we should hunt the ball down and press in packs with a high line. Once we have possession, overlapping wing backs putting the ball into the box at every opportunity with the forwards coming inside and adding to numbers in the box with the number 10 making a late run and the 2 cm’s looking to mop up anything and dropping back into a defensive shape if hit on the counter.

Quick passing football and always looking for the overlap.

Lloris

Aurier Sanchez Rodon Reggie

Hojberg Lo Celso

Lucas Ndombele Son

Kane

@glorygloryeze no Rodon? all Dier (no pun intended), no Bale either?

Damn. I forgot about both those players!!!

Ok, swap Rodon for Dier in the Sheffield Utd and Villa games. I'd play Rodon in the Leicester away game instead of Dier and play Rodon vs Wolves instead Alderwielreld. I'd keep the same defence vs Leeds though.

Bale: i'd start him in place of Moura vs Sheff utd and away to Leeds instead of Bergwijn. I'd still have him as sub for the others for now.

Do not disagree with what has been chosen so far but i think Rodon should play all games (if fit), we need to see if we can play him on a regular basis, if we can/do it means we only have to be looking for one CB this summer.

Agreed. But also because he's so far looked at least at good as our other options, is the closest thing we have to a natural left sided CB, and he actually looks like he can defend along the ground one v. one as well as defend the box when needed.

Given more opportunities he might show flaws that makes him a less attractive option, but everyone else have shown those flaws repeatedly already.

That is why i think/hope he will play all games to the end of the season, better to find out now if he can handle it and see if we can look at making him a regular going into next season.

Agreed. And he's deserved those starts based on how he's played and how our other centre backs have played this season.

Probably would make whoever is dropped unhappy, but I hope Mason will live with that.

So digging this one up as

- Lots of conversations in the Bergwijn and Dele threads that are more tactically related

So far under Nuno, it's been a clear 4-3-3, but the big caveat is that's without a striker (Kane or otherwise)

- Any thoughts on how we line up if Kane/other slots in?

Pretty much the same i would think with Son moving to Bergwijn's left wing slot

See, I don't see that

- With Bergwijn & Gil, seems clear we intend to play a wide man left
- That would potentially mean you swap Son right (or those guys right) but Lucas is clearly a form player now

Yesterdays lineup to start

- Bergwijn, Son, Lucas
- Dele, PEH, Skipp

Problem is -> 2 to come in, Kane +Lo Celso with everyone fit, so who drops and how does formation adapt?

Agreed. With the line-up yesterday, there's only 1 player who you would back to get more than 10 goals per season let alone 20. We need Kane (or replacement) in the CF spot and then ideally one of the midfielders getting 10+ goals per season too - whether thats Dele or not remains to be seen

I think the formation stays the same, but different personnel

I dont see Bergwijn and Gil will play as a left winger...more a left inside forward...but Bergwijn might leave, Gil apparently sometimes plays on the right and neither Moura nor Bergwijn get enough goals

I don't see Bergwijn leaving, if he did it would likely mean we have a replacement (probably a RW option), so doesn't solve the issue.

Lucas given the option to come inside more (as he has under Nuno and later for Jose) is more than capable of 10 a season

The other persistent rumour is Nuno wants two strikers, i.e. Kane +another in addition to Son

I've heard that rumour too, though I just put it down us not wanting the press not putting 2+2 together when we're linked with CFs - therefore better to get the rumour out there, though in reality we're planning what we would do if we get the right offer for Kane. Better than starting from scratch at that point. I don't buy the rumour as I dont recall Nuno playing with two CFs previously

I don't share your view on Moura getting many more than 10 goals per season, even if he goes get 10. In my view, there's not enough goals in a Bergwijn-Son-Moura forward line (even if Son scores consistently rather than having purple patches)

That was the paciest I've seen us play for awhile. You've got to think that if Kane had played, he would have slowed the whole thing down, as well as being marked out the game.
Maybe we'd be better off at this point selling Kane, and buying a pacy quality forward to share the middle position with Son, and then we've got Bergwijn/Moura/Son/Gil/Sessegnon/Lo Celso to rotate/sub on the other two spots?

We'll face very different challenges over the season.

A real pacey striker could make us stronger when counter attacking, but would make us worse in other phases of play unless he also had a lot of other qualities.

Kane is fantastic, there's essentially zero chance of us signing a replacement striker that makes us stronger overall, not even similar level imo. But perhaps with 2-3 quality signings for the Kane money we could get stronger. Getting 2-3 big profile signings right and quickly integrated into the team is a massive ask though.

I liked the way our players kept their position “zones” when we defended. The front three keep close to the center while Alli and PEH didn’t go wide till city reach our last 1/3 of the pitch. We were well organized.

There is zero chance we play that front line for more than a couple of games (I was talking about Lucas in a side that included Son and Kane) ..

It's Kane-Son-+1 or a replacement out and out striker.

I don't see us holding the 4-3-3 either ..

Agreed on the striker situation.

What makes you so sure about the formation?

Ah ok, agreed then. Son-Kane-Moura works from a goals perspective (Bergiwjn-new CF-Gil as back-up) though you then need some creativity in midfield
