Which player would you like to see take over from Luka Modric?

i see QPR buying a decent CB, Gallas would be an option, and if they want to take a risk, the suspended Bassong could do a job

Moutinho is integral to Porto. They know we will be flush from Modric. They are reknowned for driving a hard bargain. Moutinho will not come cheap. Even at £25m (if we can manage that), there is a further £6m reported as a fee for Ade with another £5m as signing on bonus, which leaves them at £37m all in.

Which would also be ignoring any sign on bonus for Moutinho..

Would probably end up rounding it up to £40m..

Especially when you start adding in agent fees...

AVB doesn't play wingers per se. He plays fluid passing football through the middle with 3 fairly narrow CMs. If anything we possibly need cover for our inside forwards Rafa and Bale (which I know is kind of what you were suggesting).

The wide forward cover is more a nice to have this window though IMO, in comparison with the essential two #9s, a new Modric and a GK.

From the many articles Ive read on AVB and interviews Ive seen with him I believe "his" playing style is based upon using the full width of the pitch. The wide forwards come inside to make angles for passing and carve out chances, while the full backs push up. But this is in latter stages of play. In the build up the central three rotate around each other/the ball to move play forward and consistently move the ball from flank to flank looking for opportunities (through stretching play and the opposition formation). So no, I dont believe he plays through the middle as such at all (as in a narrow, central field of play). And yes, we will certainly need back up to the wide forwards/wingers (what ever you want to call them) as they will be essential to us holding this formation successfully.

I agree, but I think a striker than can also cover for the inside forwards/wingers whatever you want to call them would be ideal. Someone like a Struridge or a Remy (although I'm not hugely keen on either).

considering no one ever includes signing on fees and agent fees when talking about transfers i don't see why we should start now

It would. I only included Adebayors as it has been widely reported as a means for the deal to happen, IE - cheap fee to City on the condition we agree a compensatory package with Adebayor RE his ridiculous wages.

I dont imagine many players sign with a £5,000,000 bonus! So if we get him for £6m its an £11m deal in my eyes.

Did you not see Sturridge's finish last night? Sublime. think he would fit into our system very well and will be a very good player.

He's already said he will be continuing with a similar formation to what we have played previously so the 433 may not come along for a while yet.

Sturridge worked well for AVB before.

He is a bit selfish IMO, could be his age, could be just the way he is. Plays for himself more than the team. Cant doubt his effectiveness - he was high quality under AVB last season.

He says a lot of things, most of the time its empty sound bites. Will have to wait and see I guess.

However, if we take him at his word and assume we will play more like Spurs of last season than Porto under AVB then back up wingers are absolutely ESSENTIAL, given that they were such a huge part of our successful formation.

TBH Defoe so clearly doesn't work in AVB's system that he's pretty much useless to us now anyway. You might as well play Lennon as a lone forward for all the good Defoe will do there.
For someone that watches so much football you are capable of saying some incredibly stupid things about the game. Defoe scores goals, always has always will..the lennon point completely undermines an opinion that otherwise i would agree with.

Been saying for ages he should be among our top targets. He thrived under AVB and he seems surplus to Chelsea atm

Makes me laugh all the Defoe-hate on here.
The fella is 10th top-scorer for the club in its history.
7 more goals & he moves up to eigth above Keane & Sheringham.
Not too shabby for a brick player really.

Sturridge has the potential to be a great player if he becomes a little bit less selfish and starts making better decisions.

Most frustrating thing about Defoe is that, based on the potential which he showed when he started his career, you would have hoped that he would have had a far better career that he has had. However he's never established himself at international level and never had the established top 4 teams looking to sign him (apart from SAF in Defoe's early days). As we've progressed, he's also not developed meaning that whereas he was a first choice around the time when Kanoute was at WHL, Defoe can no longer command a first choice spot as we've more on more than him.

Like all players, there'll be those who love and those who hate him. He's done ok/well at Spurs but not really any better and, given his age, I would cash in on him if we get any offers of over say £7m for him
