***Spurs vs Saudi Sportswashing Machine***, League Cup, 29th October 2025 at St James Park

I think it would help if they just thickened the lines a bit for offside VAR decisions. If any overlap then onside. Many of the VAR overturned offside decisions where a goal is awarded initially as the lino thinks the player is onside, are overturned for extremely small transgressions that, as you say, can be because it is impossible to get the exact moment the ball is played. I think just thickening the two lines a bit would mean those 'goals' stay goals, which I think is in the interest of football.

I'd be happy with fully automated offsides using radar technology. But that needs to come direct from the machines - having their own whistle in effect, no human involvement. I'd still abolish VAR though, and just go with goalline tech and automated offsides.

I think Johnson does what a lot of players cannot do and that is score goals. He consistently gets himself to the back post when other players do not (even on Wednesday night he got himself onto a ball and put it back across goal for what would've been a tap in for a half reasonable striker who would've followed in instead of standing around aimlessly like Richarlison did). I noticed two balls that went into similar areas after Kudus came on and Kudus had not made the run to the back post.

Sure Johnson is not much of a dribbler and he is also poor at holding the ball up but he does have attributes if used correctly. He is no longer first choice at Spurs and I don't think replacing him in the squad is much of a priority - would be way down my list after a top class CM, a top class keeper, another option at Centre forward and competition at full back as a minimum.

One thing he certainly isn't is one of the worst ever signings at Spurs. His goal in the Europa final alone has repaid his transfer fee.
Football at it's most base level is about balance. It's why we have players suited to different tasks situated across the pitch. Johnson does indeed score a certain type of chance but to get those goals means we sacrifice too much due to everything else about his game being so poor. So for me the loss of balance isn't compensated by the goals he scores, because the goals he does score are as much down to the rest of the team's work as they are to his movement and finishing. He isn't able to affect a game independently of the work of others so the loss of balance isn't worth it with him, because despite his 14 goals we still finished 17th in the league, something he contributed to in part due to his very low involvement numbers, his inability to keep the ball and his inability to progress the play, if he doesn't lose it immediately he just passes backwards killing the moment and often the momentum. Essentially playing with 10 men when he's on the pitch leads directly to the performances and losses we saw so often last season and we've seen bits of it again this season already.

With regards to it not mattering anymore now that doesn't start well Kudus can't play every single minute of every single game and when he is rested/ rotated or injured we then have Johnson as our backup option and we get performances like we did against Saudi Sportswashing Machine, so it does matter. The way to get stronger is to improve the quality of the starting 11 and then the squad around them. We want Kudus to feel pressure to perform, we need to be able to change things up effectively if plan A isn't working and if Johnson is the backup option we don't have that capability.

Replacing him is no longer a priority you're right, that was last summer's job but anytime he plays the same criticisms will occur because he frankly a very poor player and one not suited to how we want to play. As he still has some reputation it's makes absolute sense to sell him asap to get as much of that £47m back as possible and reinvest it into adding actual quality to the side.

Some beautiful FrankBall here… if only we had someone capable of putting the ball in the back of their net.
