Southern Rail

After decades it had to be regulated out by the EU.

A few hundred thousand a year vs 10's of millions ha! Priorities, have a good night and a happy new year.
Skimming a fractional percentage doesn't stop the stock exchange from running nor does it stop it making profit for its investors.

Unions can, and regularly do, stop train lines in their entirety. They are the filthy shoe scrapings of society and I will be opening a very good Bordeaux in celebration the night their pathetic bullying is made illegal.

What's your thoughts on the tobin tax and how is it consistent with your argument https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tobin_tax

Have you ever championed the financial sector as they invest and grow the economy and is stopping the full investment lead to an opportunity cost greater than a few guards on a train, strikes are only occuring due to removing a guaranteed guard.

You can admit that many brokers from 1980s to 2000s were wideboy bung throwers without weakening your position on the unions.

It may not seem like it, but I do have morals. I'd never become a union member, no matter how many zeros it added to my salary. *

As you well know, free markets have nothing to do with this. In a free market there is no need at all to limit wages as people will get paid for their worth. This is the opposite - a closed shop kept powerful by bullying and intimidation in order to increase wages way past their real value.

*Disclaimer: I am a member of both the IoD and CIMA, both of which could be construed as inactive unions. I would leave both immediately if either ever even contemplated strike action.

You say potato, I say potato, you say tomato, I say... So who determines what a person is worth? Unions negotiate with employers and come to agreement. Business don't pay, if they cannot afford it. In Scara world of course, employers are all fair and above board and would never stoop to bully or intimidate their workers. I'll tell you something, there are many, many more employers conducting themselves in this way, than unions.

It is clear that poor ole Scara has suffered some major sort of trauma at the hands of a union at some stage in his life. I would love to know exactly what it was.

The same one as everyone else who lived through the 80s in the UK. They nearly killed our economy.

Fortunately our heroine in a power suit did them enough damage to save us all - unfortunately she wasn't around long enough to kill the bastards off completely.

If you don't like the conditions get another job. Eventually the employer has to improve conditions or fail.

I couldn't put it any better myself.

I remember my first day at a Local Council (very close to Scara as it happens) and the looks/attitude i got when i was asked if i wanted to join Unison. When i told them i dont believe in Unions; if i dont like the job/conditions ill move; i dont need protection from the Union - there is employment law or its my own fault for misconduct; they were horrified how anyone could think like that.

I think anyone applying taxation should start from the principle that tax is theft. Obviously some level of taxation is required, but aiming for none and then applying it from there is the best method IMO. Then, every form of tax has to be carefully analysed for damage to how free a market is and how well it works. And obviously, everyone should pay their fair share.

So on that basis, if there is good reason to need the tax, a Tobin tax is one of the most fair methods. Everyone pays a flat percentage of each transaction, it's a fair tax. It doesn't really change the freedom of the market, but it does ever so slightly drag it (I know some people think this is a good idea, I'm on the fence). Isn't there some evidence that this kind of tax increases volatility though?

The main issue I can see is on non-profit activity like hedging. My industry (although not my company) has to hedge heavily against aluminium, steel and energy costs. Doing so is a logical way of protecting businesses, taxing it would be incredibly unfair.

I do prefer transactional/sales taxes though, they're easier to recover, harder to avoid and fairer IMO.

One other thought on it - you'd somehow have to keep pension funds protected from it too - they're already way over taxed.

Sorry, can you rephrase that? I'm not quite sure what you're getting at.

You can admit that many brokers from 1980s to 2000s were wideboy bung throwers without weakening your position on the unions.
They were. I also think their jobs were way less easy for your average person to attempt than train driving. They're obviously less able than current traders, but that's good job evolution.

Oh you mean the harpy who took elocution lessons and harboured fascist dictators. That one? The 'woman' was a national embarrassment.

Neo-liberalism is actually driving conditions of work backwards so as to boost profits. Every where you look, conditions are being eroded. Due to the competitive disadvantage that results, even good employers are forced to compromise. Many people aren't in a position to just move jobs. They're stuck with what they have, even if it's working in a dirty, unsafe and exploitative position. Of course you are well aware of this. I'm not breaking any news, you just choose to ignore this as it is an inconvenient truth that challenges your right wing ideology.

Don't let any facts get in the way of a good rant.

It's simply disgraceful, but it's the Govt's fault for letting all TOCs to set fares at 1% above inflation, it used to be a lot more though

I only travel to London for pleasure and now sometimes health reasons, I would be livid if I had to put up with the service some people are from Brighton to Victoria and pay 5 odd grand for the pleasure seems perverse and not in a good way.

As you say they are simply laughing in the faces of the thousands who pay a fortune to get to work each day, it's disgusting and would only be allowed in the UK
