Son Heung-Min

You just confirmed my point.
YOU think it's pointless and meaningless. Almost every footballer wants to play for their national team and represent their country. It means A LOT to them, more than their club for many, as they actually have a connection to their national team, unlike their club, who is just their day job, who they otherwise don't really have any connection to.

see that’s what I don’t understand, you choose your club

Ok I’ll ask :D what it is exactly that you are ashamed of?

And I disagree with your opinion about the World Cup. Messi certainly did not react like it was no big deal when Argentina won it, nor did the French who lost. I take the point about the CL being more important and growing to something more than it was 30 years but that is largely down to money. Winning the World Cup is still something that every footballer wants on their CV. I don’t know if it’s the number one trophy anymore, but ask Ronaldo how he felt after Portugal were knocked out by Morocco and then he had to watch Messi go on and win it.

The anti-immigrant stance, colonialism, creating the Church of England.

I'm so fudging sick of comments like that.
You (English people) sticking your nose high, and think the world of football is just the Premier league, and all other football is brick and no one cares.

Well you're fudging wrong! Just stop this idiotic disregard for anything other than the premier league. It's boring, and it makes you look like more tits than you actually are.
Just stop it.

The poster you are referring to has a long history of hating international football and an even longer history of hating the English, one of the self hating liberals.

So many of them in this country hate English people showing any form of pride in their country that it has filtered down into even some football fans.

Ironically it is not coming from a place of hating foreigners as that poster would fall over himself to tell you so.

I don't think it would matter if we had 11 English internationals or 11 African internationals playing for us. We're spurs, we are never going to fcuking win.

Colonialism and slavery are/were horrific institutions but you do realise they were practiced all over the world by every race don’t you? But it only seems to be England and America that get stick for it to this day and continually beat ourselves up over it. You don’t hear the French, Romans, Greeks, Tunisians to name a few constantly bringing it up as a way to knock their own countries. Certainly not as often as we mention it.

More and more literature by respected historians saying that Africans willingly sold other Africans into slavery and also that the middle Eastern rulers were absolutely barbarians.

I’m not related to any of them.

It seems quite a lot of people willingly choice to come and live in England and indeed many other countries round the world. Been reading a bit of John Steinbeck recently, migration and people being proud of where they end up is nothing to be ashamed of. Try opening up your heart to love.
You can see it with the passion some of the second generation players have when playing for England
Only to get abused when it doesn’t go their way

Do you really think/believe that??? Players get sold to whoever wants them and offers the best package for the player and selling club. Most players don't play for their favourite club at top level!

Who said it's only England and America that practiced colonialism and slavery? Just because others did it, doesn't make it okay, it's funny how so many defensive arguments boil down to playground level logic.

It's interesting seeing a thread that in the last two pages totally went to brick without me wading in but that's the off season for you.

they have a choice, and there is enough money in the game now that they don't have to play for a club they don't want to play for, which is why 99.9% of professional footballers don't play for liverpool

I think its also important where you salary comes from

You've lost me on this point. Players do have to willingly sign for a club ie they do not have a gun to their head and are able to pick according to various circumstances.

Baleforce can be infuriating but his reasonable point is you choose who you work for but not where you're from..

Players aint supporters… they work for a Club, so they play for the Club that pay and give you the things you want. I can take another job that pays a little better, but I like my job, the ppl that work there and my boss. (Have not read all the posts)
But!!

I think if Son want to make alot or money we are selling him..

You don't hear the French bringing it up because (and I may be assuming here, please correct me if so mate) you aren't reading a lot of French outlets.

I lived in, and currently work in, Quebec. I assure you, there are plenty of French-speaking folk who recognize the exceptionally brutal history of French colonialism. Probably a lot in France too - left-wing there is pretty strong, after all.

I think in general there are always pluralities of people ashamed of their history and proud of it, and a majority of people who don't care either way but will take a stance aligning with their political allegiances if pushed. This is true of most developed countries (which map neatly with those who engaged in colonialism). For developing countries, there tends to be a mythologisation of their past as a reaction to being colonized/poor, so it's a different dynamic there.
