Social Media

He has a point, this bloke is literally being encouraged into an early grave

He's not the first. People have already died from similar.

I’ve had a day today where I just feel really… fed up, I’ll say, of society.

So, to all of you, I am faceless person on the internet, and so with that in mind I’m happy to tell you as a bunch of strangers that over the years I’ve really struggled with mental health issues. I have absolutely zero shame in saying that, I’m mostly out the other side of it but of course as I’m sure those of you who have been there know, it can be easy to be pulled back in to that head space.

I try, as much as possible, to edit what I see on social media. I try to avoid the rage bait and the obvious nasty people. I was scrolling through my Facebook timeline this morning, and I came across this video someone had filmed on a motorway. Unfortunately, someone was either hanging off the bridge or sitting on the edge of it considering jumping. The person filming had tagged the video referring to the hero of the piece who was a nearby lorry driver, who moved his cab underneath the person so that if they did fall, they fell 6 foot rather than 26 foot.

However, if you had your sound on, you realise that the person filming, and the person sitting next to them, spend the entire time openly mocking the person, telling them to jump. Saying how they would push him off if they were up there and calling him various names.

I can’t lie, this stuff really triggers me. It makes me think of where I was, and it makes me think of where this person probably was. He got a lot of comments on the video calling him out on what he said during it, and he’s spent the day posting more videos where he’s now trying to double down, and he’s changing his sorry to make himself seem like the one in the right, and happily I’ve just checked and no one’s having any of it.

He runs a boxing gym, and a lot of his posts are about how he “does a lot for mental health” but you watch his videos and he is clearly talking absolute nonsense, and is basically a scum bag of the highest order. His boxing gym this morning had a Google review rating of 4.9. Since his videos, people have been leaving reviews about his conduct online and he’s now hovering around 3.1. It actually feels like a nice bit of karma to me.

It’s really had an effect on me today, and I’m not posting here for any real engagement or sympathy, or anything else. I just noticed there was a social media thread and wanted to vent I think. I really hope this Jonathan Stoner bloke disappears somewhere else and never has to be seen or heard from again because if he’s coaching kids which he seems to be, then they aren’t getting anything worthwhile from him.

So much hate and anger in the world now, and so many people who think the world needs to hear them putting others down and looking to put them over the edge when they’re struggling to cope. If anyone is struggling, as cliche as it sounds, please reach out and talk to someone close to you. I hate that idiots like this make others think that no one cares about them.

Just wanted to vent and get this off my chest tbh.

Firstly it’s always good to have a place where you feel you can vent and I think over the years this site (and I am sure lots of others) have proven to offer that safe place to do so.

Secondly it is great that you do not feel any shame in admitting to mental health issues (as you quite rightly should not). I think our world is getting a lot better at talking about these things but equally there’s a long way to go.
Social media is both a force for good and at the same time an absolute cesspit showcasing the worst of humanity.
I think the awful situation you describe could now be governed by the Online Safety Act which I believe covers incitement to suicide.
As this person is identifiable hopefully the law will catch up with him.
Trying to find a positive, it’s hugely encouraging that so many people seems to be calling out and challenging this guy.

In the meantime you need to protect your own mental health. Not sure what advice to give apart from the obvious “stay off social media”. But why should you have to limit your interactions and potentially isolate yourself due to the unacceptable posts of other people?
I don’t think there is any easy answer and I am most certainly not qualified to give one. But please just know that you can post here whenever you feel triggered or if you are struggling and there will always be someone willing to listen and help.

Firstly Rafa you have a superpower staring down you MH problems and the strength to verbally lay your cards down in front of others.

If it's SM that triggers you (and it certainly has all the fire power in the world to do that) then the obvious option is to abstain?.

People (not just you) concern themselves with far too much these days. About people, stuff, situations, events that they would have zero awareness of 20 years ago. 200 years ago you wouldn't even know what was occuring in the next village.

There's plenty of stuff to be intrigued, curious about, stuff that YOU decide to seek.

The attention economy is mostly built on outrage, negativity, nastiness, trolling as it's a monetized system. It'll suck you in, as you know.

It's a safe space here though. Always remember that ❤️

Social media is both a force for good
Shrinking rapidly.....
But why should you have to limit your interactions and potentially isolate yourself due to the unacceptable posts of other people?
He doesn't have to. He just needs to proceed with life before SM existed.

Scary that the name social is in theory positive but used by many to be negative
You are 100% right to vent
This may be an anonymous site but everyone here is a human like yourself
This video nailed it for me
