Shoreham By Sea airshow crash

It is very close to me, I live in Bramber just 3 miles from the crash site.

I am so saddened to hear of the lose to human life, really tragic. A good friend of my wife volunteers in the RAFA tent making lunches for all the old veterans. As the whole site was shut down on the saturday after the crash and no vehicles were allowed to leave people had to leave by foot and public transport.

Of course this was not feasible for the old veterans some who were in the 90's so they stayed there waiting patiently as people of that generation do. But as time got on some of them were needing their medication from their care homes which were dotted about all over sussex.

The police tried to help but resources were understandably stretched. That is when some of the spectators who lived locally and had left their cars at home drove to different areas of sussex to retrieve the medication for the veterans.

A truly sad day and time but a lovely side story that when I heard this morning made me feel a little better about it all.

On a side not I am refusing to have anything to do with the daily mail newspaper after its online edition showed pictures of people sat in a car just about to be engulfed in flames. I understand the need to report on news but what happened to us as a people that we think it is acceptable to show pictures of people about to burn to death.

I don't really understand people going to airshows... every summer there are several crashes around Europe... it is no surprise. So you're basically taking your family along to somewhere where they could get smashed to pieces by a burning jet.

My colleague was one of the top stunt pilots in the UK and regularly competed at events but eventually as his friends got killed one by one he stopped competing and started judging... but his friends continued to die one by one and he walked away... crazy "sport".

That's a really heartwarming thing to read Danish.

I don't know why the demos are not over water/unpopulated green belt?

Working in Insurance as I do I saw an email today noting who led the liability policy in the Lloyd's market it has policy limits of £25m, not much to go round amongst the dead and horrifically injured, my company stopped insuring air shows after the Reno air show loss in 2011

There are an awfully large amount of accidents each year

First pubic death at airshow in the uk since the early 60s.

From the sounds of it the pilot was a bit of a hero, he made the choice to hit the road rather than a field full of spectators.

Apparently displays over water can make it hard for pilots to discern between sea and air as the horizon can blur.

Awful event, feel terribly for those affected and hope the pilot pulls through, can shed some light and find some self-forgiveness... I'd imagine this will (rightly or wrongly) weigh heavily.

Agree about some of the media coverage, especially the Mail. Sadly I can't say I refrained from looking.

as someone who goes to Air shows I have never been anywhere near one where an accident can happen. So I still go. Saying they should all be over sea is just an over reaction. I would wait for the details on this, but from first glance it appears to me he either lost power so he was unable to get the plane to its full height or he blacked out somehow. He should never have been over the road when he started the stunt. The ones I go to at duxford the planes are always over the field and grass, if they was to come down they would be nowhere near spectators.

We are getting to a point now where early jet planes are coming in to shows as Legend planes. They are a lot harder to maintain than prop planes.

A close friend of mine works for a company based at Shoreham Airport ( there is a large industrial estate around the outside). This company makes specialist engines for vehicles of all sorts. For this they need fuel, which they keep in a large storage depot which for safety was put as far away as possible from the industrial estate, in a corner of the airfield very near the A27. If the aircraft had missed the road and stayed in the air for another 2 or 3 seconds if would have crashed into a tank holding 5,000 Gallons of petrol.

I think it is disgusting the guy is still walking around free after his stupidity has killed 11 people. It had a big effect on this area and it needs to have a line drawn under it, never understand why these things take so long to come to court. It actually has me quite angry.

Was it the pilots fault? Have not followed the story since it happened so thats a genuine q

Yes it was, sorry for the late reply.

Pretty much all the experts say he came in to low after doing a loop and he had previous warnings for doing this. 11 people lost their lives, I know a family member of one who died. It really has not given them any closure. I am done with talking politics in general because it gets you no where but this incident for my mind needs to be resolved so people can finally move on and that piece of brick rots in prison somewhere.
