Ryan Mason

His deep runs, like the one he made for the goal, is something we're desperately crying out for. Great goal, hope it was just a knock and nothing more serious.

Interesting part of the article above is the part of the quote which says: " I can’t forget that I’m a defensive central midfielder now"

Indicates how he's being told to play

Yeah - I guess outsiders don't know he's converted from a #10, so is a creative player gone backwards, rather than a ballwinner pushing forwards.

Anyone who has watched him for Spurs knows that he doesnt play as a no 10. However was surprised to see him describe himself as a 'defensive' midfielder

Before yesterday's game I compared him to Aaron Ramsey. Played in primarily a defensive role, or at least an "all action" role in his earlier career, and suffered a lot of injuries. I don't think Mason has been any worse for us than Ramsey was before his breakthrough season in 2013-14. When Ar5ena1 signed Flamini and gave Ramsey the licence to push forward, the results were remarkable.

Now that Dier is taking on the defensive repsonsibilities, I do think we'll see a lot more from Mason in an attacking sense, bursting forward with late runs into the box. Now of course, to supplement this we need our "Ozil" and "Cazorla" to be able to pick him out with those runs. The obvious two candidates are Eriksen and Bentaleb, so let's hope they're both fit soon.

Not sure Ramsey's a good comparison. A mate of mine (Mike) was a Cardiff City season ticket holder when Ramsey broke through with them, and I remember Mike excitedly telling me about a young player who'd been running games from full back -- to the Cardiff fans, it was a matter of when he'd go to a CL club, not if. Mike was expecting Ramsey to absolutely tear up the Prem at Arsenal, but of course he had a slow (and injured) first couple of seasons before starting to show his potential. I hate to admit it, but I absolutely love the passion, energy and quality he and Bale have been showing for Wales -- not something I've seen in an England shirt since the days of Psycho and then Beckham.

Mason, being home-grown, has been much more off the radar, and of course has had to mix it with a whole bunch of top prospects -- I don't think I heard much on here (and elsewhere) about him being an absolute world-beater. Not saying that he can't be as good as Ramsey, just that he didn't have the same levels of hype.

As Mason's naturally attacking, I'd imagine that Poch has been focussing his training on the defensive arts, so that's probably what's being drummed into him at the moment. I could imaging Dier coming out with exactly the opposite quote.

An absolutely fantastic goal by him yesterday - hats off! I thought he did really well in the second half, but thought he was poor in the first. Missed a lot of passes and didn't seem to be in the right positions to receive the ball at all, which meant we had very little central midfield presence.

Again though, what a goal. Best Spurs team goal I've seen in ages - so hats off to him. :)

There is no way that Mason has the talents to be a defensive midfielder, I hope he knows and understands that. Poch may have worked with him on that last year but it did not work and the fact that he is playing Dier there would suggest Poch has excepted it.

For me Mason will always be the more advanced one of the double pivot. The Schneiderlin to Bentaleb/Dier's Wanyama. I agree that I'd never use him as a DM in more of a traditional diamond CM.

As long as we do not (double pivot) him back with Bentaleb I agree.

It was a brilliant goal but I must admit, I thought he'd fudged it up when he made that first touch! :p

Did well to get there first.

If these quotes originate from the pre-match interview the he did with Alli for Sky, he was talking about becoming more of a deep-lying playmaker and playing in a more defensive role. He didn't say that he is becoming a defensive midfielder. After all he played at #10 for basically his whole youth career and likely some of his loan career too.

I am sure that we will need to play that pairing again this season and if they play well, it could well get a run of games.

I rate Bentaleb more highly than Mason, so it is almost a shame that the mistake against Man U, injuries and the form of Dier and Mason have likely left him out in the cold for the foreseeable future.

If Bentaleb can work on his decision making and the defensive side of his game, he will be a top class player. Unfortunately I think both he and Mason would benefit from being paired with Dier while they improve defensively, which means it is essentially Mason vs Bentaleb.

I do wonder whether Bentaleb would benefit from a top-flight loan at some point in order to guarantee playing time if it transpires that he does not get it here.

Long-term you would like to think that he and Mason could form a partnership, with Dier dropping back to CB. This certainly seems more of a logical progression for the squad, but right now I think it may not be feasible.

I was thinking more in terms of injuries, suspensions and fatigue meaning that they will play together at some stage. At the moment I agree that Dier's form means that it should be him with one of the two but that can change over the course of a season. I do not think that Poch is as set on an out and out DM as many on here and that the current situation has been forced on him somewhat.

Oh I agree, I am sure we will see them together. I am just dubious that they will play well enough as a pairing to get an extended run of games now that Dier has both proven himself in, and started growing into, the DM role.

I think provided they both kick on defensively this season, which Mason seems to be doing at least, then we will see them holding down the CM spots more as a pair next season. Last season was very promising but also very frustrating - we looked extremely raw and were easily exposed through CM.

I think it depends on what Poch prioritises for central midfield as the season goes on. I could envisage a situation where he prioritises moving the ball forward quickly again. Dier has not been bad on the ball this season but he is not as good as an on form Bentaleb and Mason. That said, we should be happy to have the three of them and they should all get plenty of game time over the course of a season.

Fair enough then, all I was doing is replying to what a earlier poster had quoted.

Well I hope not as neither of them have the ability to offer much protection to our back four, but we have covered that ground before.
