Ryan Mason

Perhaps when Bentaleb returns we could see Mason given more freedom to start further forward. Perhaps even a midfield trio with the two of them with Capoue/Stambouli anchoring behind.

For now though we need his ability on the ball in that deeper midfield role imo.

what we need more is a solid midfield 2 that can actually protect the back 4.

Not being funny but since Mason has come in has anyone actually noticed a drastic increase in chances created? people keep talking about how vital it is to have a ball playing CM that can release the ball quickly to the attacking 4 ...but i haven't noticed anything different at all. We're still creating very little.

I genuinely think protecting the back 4 is as much down to the front 4 as the midfield 2. If anything moving Mason forward would at least give us more running and pressing in that front 4.

Are you saying that having a ball playing central midfielder isn't important? If so I can't see us agreeing on this.

but what are yous seeing with your eyes currently? that's the question i'm asking. How can something be 'vital' when there is no marked improvement to how things were before?

I like Mason and think we should give him a go in his natural number 10 role. None of the current crop of players have looked particularly good in that role (bar Kane in cup games) so lets now try something new. Put two defensively solid CM's in the midfield 2 and allow Mason to express himself further forward.

Currently, compared to how things were before? When before exactly?

Mason has started 6 games, Bentaleb has started 3. That's our two best deep passing midfielders imo. If you're comparing us with last season under AVB (last time we actually played two defensively solid deep midfielders we're significantly better in attack imo. Along with getting Ade in the team in form getting a passing midfielder into that midfield two was one of the primary reasons we got better going forward under Sherwood last season.

We haven't been good enough perhaps, but we've been a lot better going forward than defending. The problem defensively primarily stems from our poor pressing imo. Moving Mason further forward might help that, but I wouldn't want to see that at the cost of passing ability in our central midfield. I genuinely think Poch wants us to be able to build and play from the back and through midfield with high tempo passing. I would rather see us keep building towards that than to abandon it.

The weak link in the CM s is Capoue of late, not Mason IMO

Mason is clearly there to create as much as defend where as Capoue offers neither of this'd recently to good effect (but I thought he started the season well)

For me I'd like to see Satmbouli with Mason and potentially even Mason with him but more like a 4-1-4-1 formation.

I agree with Braneclipse that we are suffering massively from a lack of defensive effort from the attacking 4. The only one who does any defending is Lamella and he for me is having no really positive impact on the game other than his work rate. Get those players putting in a shift up front and you can defend from the front and ease the pressure

My worry is to bring in 2 defence minded players we would have to resort to Dembele with one other in order to get some creativity in there and he is a player who has regressed massively

@FourFourTwo: HT #HCAFC 1-0 #THFC http://fft.sm/4F2BCj Mason tops Spurs charts for passes, tackles, recoveries, chances created

Thought he has another good game, at times was one of the only players to actually get the ball and pass it fast and try to get things going, did well to play on after he got nobbled too

I agree. Its sad in a way that a youth player is out shinning all the fancy expense and overpaid foreigns. Lession to be learnt here, you dont have to spend money all the time.

I know what you mean, that it's sad we splashed a load of cash in such a way, but Mason has shown himself to be well deserving of his starts this season.

This this this! I was sat there thinking that our best 3 midfielders could be Mason, Bentaleb and er... blimey... anyone really, perhaps Stambouli because nobody has seen him play much... certainly not Dembele as he NEVER passes forwards... who else is there? Capoue is more of a destroyer than footballer. Maybe make up the 3 with Tom Carroll or Jake Livermore! Cheap as chips, better than £30m of talent.

Excuse my spelling but Onoh that fella who played well in Ledley's testiminoal last season, how old is he? maybe another we can promote.

Mason is not the finished article and might not even be playing in his best position but I like his discipline and work rate. I think it says how good coaching is getting in this country that he looks better and is more of a team player then some of the others. Maybe English youth football will become the new "Belgium"

We could also look to bring back pritchard and get rid of lennon rather then spending loads of money. Rumours that Burnley want to loan him from us in January and that would be a good move and help him settle into the prem.

Pritchard is at the perfect club for him right now. A team that's doing well, playing good passing football and he is a regular starter. Last thing he needs is a relegation dog fight.

Nathan oduwa..... He's not ready from what I've seen.

Best player we have is josh onomah - watch this space but he looks to be a real player

How could you not notice he's a Hull player?

He'd come back in a flash, he never wanted to leave and still loves us.

Our Academy players have better touch and more heart and more understanding of the game than the expensive replacements we're buying.

Carroll Bentaleb

Mason

The future!! Cannot do any worse than we are at the moment.

Bentaleb needs to move the ball quicker if you ask me - similar to Dembele's major weakness. Also think Mason's best position is where he's playing today, rather than in a more advanced role

Agreed. Hope he's fine for the Everton game, looked like he was struggling after that dreadful tackle from Livermore. Good on the lad for playing on, but it will cost us if it means Mason misses out on future games.
