Which central/deep playmaker is also a "crunching" tackler? Why is that something it's fair to expect?
He's a very good pass and move player, two footed and effective. He moves really well to get involved, can score and can in deed pick a telling attacking pass more often than most in our team. Defensively he seems to reliably get back into position, doesn't fall asleep and isn't afraid of a tackle. Again, what more is fair to expect from a 23 year old whose primarily a ball player having made 5 PL appearances?
Been very much needed this season after we failed to secure a ball playing midfielder in the transfer market and Bentaleb has been performing a bit worse than last season and now been injured.
Isn't that exactly whats happening now? :rio:
You're not going to get unanimous agreement on players - even our very best players over the years had people who didn't rate them as much as others.
He looks to me now to be a cross between Gerrard and Modric (not as good yet) and he is exactly what we need and England need
If Stambouli is half the player we hope he is, him and mason could really complement each other
I don't get the Modric comparisons tbh.

Modric has a little burst of pace with the ball. When he sees space he pushes forward in to it, leaving a couple of players behind and then lays it off well. Dembele and Wheelchair do the same thing but without Modrics end product. In terms of ability or style of play? If you're talking about style of play what in particular do you think is missing from Mason's game?

If Mason has this in his locker he would be more in Lukas mould.
I hope he does. I know that Bankrupt and WindyCoys rate him as a number 10 or AM. They have been raving about him for years. They know Spurs youth setup as well as most.Thought he showed some real signs of being capable of stuff like that against Villa. He has very good close control and isn't slow I think, fairly quick over short distances at least.
If he has been avoiding doing stuff like that frequently in first handful of games for us I can understand it.
he doesn't seem like modric to me. i wish he was, but i feel that his read of the game isn't on modric's level. even on tv, it was easy to see modric's pure level of class, from when he sold a dummy, to long driven passes up the pitch. to me, mason doesn't have that. this doesnt mean he isnt a good player, it's just for me he isn't like modric. I also think he's not for the deep 2 in CM, but he needs to be further forward. not sure how much physically he will develop further but for me i like a bit more athleticism there. I think as the third man in midfield, either from the left or as part of a 3 he will do best and shine, as his positional sense, incisive and creative passing, shooting ability and willingness to move to receive a pass will be more effective, but as a 2 i don't feel he can show his full potential at the moment,as he has a lot of defensive responsibilities that are hard for him to manage.
i understand he can put in a tackle, but he isnt sandro, for instance. more a scotty parker type - and also, we're supposed to be becoming a high tempo pressing team? that ability would still be useful a little further up.

I think so far he has looked top draw. If he had a name and big price tag then we would all be getting very excited.
IMO he is far ahead of Carroll and Bentelab and touch wood he stays fit as he is a very accomplished player who can do a good job for us!
