Rough highlights of Prem teams' transfer windows

Bullet

Andy Thompson
It can be hard to keep up with all the comings and goings, so it would be good to keep a rough eye on the HIGHLIGHTS (not minutiae) of our rivals and other teams with pretensions of being around the top half of the Prem, despite being brick.

Because our performance this year doesn't only matter how well Spurs' transfer window goes... it is all relative to how well our rivals are doing, in the chase for glory.

I'm only listing the top few ins and outs of players I have heard of i.e. they played last year or might play this year, not all the chod.

City are losing Delap/Harwood-Bellis/Ederson?? and brought in Savio ........ (and could/should be deducted points, court case outcome at end of Nov)

Pool are losing Matip/Thiago/Carvalho and brought in ???

Arse are losing Elneny/Lokonga/SmithRowe/ObiMartin/Nketiah? and brought in (Raya)/Calafiori

Manure are losing Wan Bissaka/Varane/Martial/(Amrabat?)/(Greenwood)/Kambwala/(van de Beek)/Williams and brought in Zirkzee/De Ligt/Mazraoui/Yoro(injured)/(Martinez back fit)

Villa are losing Luiz/Diaby/Sanson/Iroegbunam/Moreno and brought in Archer/Dobbin/Maatsen/Iling-Junior/Barkley/Philogene/Onana [someone said they sold Archer and Philogene then bought them back a year later, tacos, and then got rid of Archer again, and Iling-Junior, what?]

Newcash are losing Karius/Anderson/Minteh/(Tonali suspended?) and brought in Kelly/Hall/Osula

Cheats are losing Silva/Ziyech/Maatsen/Hutchinson/Sarr/(Hall) and brought in Tosin/Kellyman/Veiga/Willian/Jorgensen/Anselmino/Dewsbury-Hall/Guiu/Neto? ........... (are they having points deducted?)

Wet Spam are losing Ogbonna/Zouma/Johnson/Benrahma/Downes/Kehrer and brought in Kilman/Summerville/Fullkrug/Todibo [Edit apparently Paqueta can still play for them as it will take all year to determine the extent of his guilt?!]

Spurs are losing Dier/Parrott/Hojbjerg/Perisic/Sess/Tanganga/Ndombele/Rodon/Royal/Reggie?/(Gil, Veliz loans) and brought in Werner/Bergvall/Gray/(Yang)/Solanke/(Feeney)

I'm sure there are various names and/or rumours I'm missing above, any you can spot?
It will be interesting to note key losses e.g. Cheats losing Silva, Manure losing Varane, Villa losing Luiz

Hmm, Kilman's okay. But they've overpaid a bit there I feel.
Looks like Alvarez has picked up a bad injury and combine that with Paqueta's betting issue, suddenly they need to do a fair bit more just to stand still.
Kilman is ok, not a bad CB at all but £40m? Thats the same price as Van De Ven, and we paid £25m (including add-ons) for Dragusin. Its the good old English nationality/Premier League tax, there is far better value out there....

A lot of people, myself included, thought £40m a pretty high price for a young CB who'd had a couple of seasons at one of the mid-table Bundesliga clubs and seemed to be doing fairly well but not making the headlines.

I'd argue that £40m for a solid English 27yo CB with Prem experience (and 2 years left on his contract) isn't ridiculous compared to £25m for a youngster from Genoa. Kilman's also a known quantity for the manager signing him. Worth it if you know you're getting the right CB and you're a club that can't afford to take punt after punt.

Paqs off to Brazil apparently, looking to avoid the bans there if rumours are true.

Man Utd have signed Zirkzee. Not a player I know enough about to have any idea as to if that's a treading water signing or a shrewd improvement

I think price tags should only be considered with hindsight. Paying 40m for a guy, winning a cup or getting into the CL and selling him a couple of seasons down the line, even for half the price is a very good piece of business in my opinion. Getting a guy on a free who won't play a game all season is a poor decision, no matter what.

A player who improves your fortunes is rarely too expensive, unless, of course, you do a Leeds and bankrupt your club in order to get them.

Not sure about that
The legacy’s value of that player is huge
Let’s look at Anthony at United
£85m wasnt it
He has been there for the cup wins but not contributed really in the last one
The club haven’t seen their fortunes improve whilst he has been there even with those wins

Signing any player who you won’t okay is madness but it does happen as we know

It's probably a good example as I see he's valued around 20m at the moment. I'm trying to fit a square peg in a round hole here (I did say 'rarely' though!) but winning these two cups still has some value for United. As we know, a long time without any silverware (something that can easily happen these days) gives your club an unwanted reputation for being also-ran.

I'm still convinced you can lure anyone with the right number of zeros on their paycheck but being a top club helps when there's competition for a player. There's no doubt United are living on Ferguson's heritage but I think these cup wins help people think they're still a big club winning trophies.

Last but not least, when I say transfers should considered with hindsight, I meant the assessment should be based on the player's contribution and not the team results. I could be wrong because I don't follow United that closely (when I was younger, I used to watch pretty much every PL game...) but I was under the impression that Anthony's performances attracted a lot of criticism. There's a good chance he was in the team for these cup wins because he cost them a lot of money rather than on merit.

All fair comments

I don’t think he played in the second final

They have replaced him with a kid from the youth/recruitment in Garnacho

The fee being touted looks high, he is 23 so not a kid and has not torn up football, had an "ok" season at Bologna and nothing more, his first real season and was seemingly being Weghorst for the Dutch. Odd

I saw a circle diagram that the football stats pages use, of Zirkzee, and it was very unimpressive. Trying to find it again, but can't remember which outlet posted it on teletext.
