Rodrigo Bentancur

I was actually going to post for all the criticism Van hecke gets on here, he had a good game (one of the statistical sites had him in team of the season so far after first 5 games).

But then he fudged up later in the second half no doubt. But I will maintain he's nowhere near as bad as has been made out, him and Senesi both looked solid. In fact considering the amount of excuses that were made for Romero on a weekly basis for his fudge ups, I'd still say Van Hecke had a good game :D....
I was really impressed with both yesterday, more so when you consider their lack of pace

After watching the game I'm pleased I don't play anymore, I just have no idea of what is a foul and what is not. I said to my son I don't think the players know either, hardly anyone can tackle properly and they all grab, push or pull opponents. I believe this has come about as referees let so much go and there is not consistency in their decisions.

Rodrigue knows how to tackle; he proved it against Shaw.
There are still good tacklers in the Premier League.

Much as I dislike the use of stats figures of tackles in games are very low and success rate about 50/60%. Few players in possession hold it long enough to be tackled.
There was virtually no exposure to South American football live or in media when I was a youngster until '62 world cup in Chile, since then I've been impressed with their strong defensive play particularly Argentina and Uruguay, they take no prisoners unfortunately they are also very violent.

And Paraguay

Absolutely. Make a meal out of it, feign injury, scream, look like you're really, really hurt - we need to do it, because it works. It's something I really hate about the modern game, but when refs fall for it and the football authorities don't do anything to fix it, you gotta play by the rules they govern by.
See Lamela at Old Trafford getting Martial sent off in the 6-1 game.

I wonder how he's feeling now about his prospects of playing in the first team? I am sure he will get opportunities, but the Tonali/Fernandes axis now looks settled. It is, as the old saying goes, a nice problem to have for the manager.

Yeah - I'd effectively swap him for a HG RB like Norton-Cuffy next summer, and let Gray become one of the core CMs.
Gray isn't going to start ahead of Tonali or Fernandes if we are honest. It's going to be interesting to see how he takes being a rotation option with Bergvall. Next season should hopefully see us having more games but I don't think we should rest on our laurels we should always be trying to improve on what we already have so it might be the case that another good option comes into our viewpoint. It's going to be healthy competition but as it stands I think we have a very clear starting two who are significantly ahead of the rest of the options.

The squad is built for Europe

In a functioning Spurs, domestic cup and early European rounds would give time to likes of Bentancur, Gray, Bergvall, Senesi, Marmoush, Wilson, Deki, etc. I'd also like to see as we get better, players like Tonali/Fernandes/Kudus/Maddison, even Porro/VDV get subbed out to keep fresh.

Don't think Bentancur is a priority to upgrade in next windows, to me the order is CF x2, RB, probably LB.

The challenge is the UEFA squad quotas. You can't add U21's and put on the B-list until they've completed 2 years under our regsitration. You can't add A-list unless they displace one of our existing 17 players. You can only have 4 association trained and 4 club trained. I think we have only 3 of the latter for next season.

Our squad can't realistically get any bigger. We'll probably be back to having players in the PL squad not named in the UEFA one.

a) I don't really see a problem. For me it is fine if a player is registered for the PL, League Cup and FA Cup but not EL/CL. You just select your least 'needed' player and give them more time outside the European matches. And if you don't really want to give them that time as they are fringe/not great, then it is fine to leave them out of EL/CL anyway! Think of it like this, say we had a player that is less needed e.g. Tosin or Mudryk or Davies or someone... option (1) is to sell them, option (2) is to keep them as back up for League/FA but not register them for Europe. That is fine for me, option 1 is fine unless someone gives us good money.

b) We will always have injuries, recently it was Deki Madd Xavi Odobert all out for 12 months, next it will be some other glut of players with ACLs or whatnot, so you need a squad larger than "if everyone is fit" because long and hard seasons = injuries.

c) I believe the registration period is only until Xmas, so you can leave someone out, then at Xmas reassess if someone is injured or out of form or sold or just swap out Davies and swap in Tosin or whatever and say "you've had your chance, now chill"

So what is the problem?

But at end of this season -> Richi, Davies are gone, decisions need to be made about Wilson, Tel, Gray, Bergvall, Bentancur, Solanke, even Maddison, Xavi and Deki (last three based on ability to find/keep fit and form).

Probably about 5 out in some form or another.

So what is the problem?

I guess the problem becomes trying to keep a player motivated once you've told them that you're not going to use them in Europe. I would think CL football is what players aspire to play. Different if you're on the road to recovery from injury I guess. You might understand why a reduced fixture list would work for you. I wouldn't think being left out of any squad fits a psychology of a top professional.

You're certainly right about injuries having that big influence on the half season that your squad is registered for. I know there is special dispensation for long term injuries after the UEFa squad is named.

As for you less needed comment, it actually shares the problem
Tosin / Davies - association trained
Mudryk - A-list

2 are cometing for one spot in the current squad profile. The other is competing with 17 A-list players.

It's about getting the mix right and that is a multi-year planning challenge that I think we're doing quite well at. Club trained is still not matured though.

If we picked a UEFA squad today, Richi or Davies could only be in it if other first team members weren't. So that is sort of a moot point with those 2.

Taking your list:
Gray, Bergval - Club trained next season
Wilson, Bents, Xavi, Deki - A-list
Solanke, Madds - Association trained

That sort of shows the point. The first 2 are safe as houses in a UEFA model. They served their 2 years registration and this season they would have been List B U21 free picks. Next season I believe they are club trained along with Austin. We only managed to fill one of those slots in our EL campaign.

It's the A-list that always gets competitive. Even if you have 5 or 6 association trained, you can only name 4. So that puts even more pressure on the A-list.

I guess my point is that it is not quite as easy as some people think. Also why I'm glad Bergval stuck around.
