Rodrigo Bentancur

It was a harsh booking, crazy to be fair. Along with Romero the last player you want picking up undeniably soft yellows.

Rough stat on Bentancur, before today he'd apparently lost his last seven league starts - Well now it's 8.

Who thought that Bergvall / Gray / Kulu getting shifted in were going to come in and sort out the mediocre mess that is our midfield. If we rely on the likes of Bentancur / Biss then we're fudged from the off, relying on unreliable players tends to go one way.

He might have solved problems in Conte's midfield but he doesn't look like a solution in our current set up..

a big part of the problem is maddison. recently he often drops too deep and bentancur is caught in no man's land.
with hojberg it was quite predictable that he would prefer to stay around the centre spot and bentancur could overlap him.
its all not very clear what maddison is trying to do and it think it affects more players than just bentancur.

I think this is a really interesting observation and a good point. I personally got very frustrated again with Maddison dropping deep in the first-half. With the goons essentially sitting deeper, either Romero or Bentancur could easily have progressed the ball quickly into the areas where I think Maddison should be operating to weave his stuff.

On a pod earlier, they said Bentancur is incapable of receiving the ball and turning and beating the press and progressing the ball forwards, like Bissouma would, so Maddison had to come and do it for him. I was surprised at that take on things... Bentancur is a VERY capable player and would generally have plenty of time to get the ball and pass 15 yards to someone higher up.
Everything was so safety first, nobody tried to beat their man or make something happen or bully their way through, it was all so tentative. No balls.

The strangest thing for on Sunday was that the goons were not in an aggressive press at all to start with. In fact, they got more aggressive on the press when we slowed our play down from the back to walking pace; we invited all of it to my eye.

The played it safe since they were missing some key players and it worked out perfectly for them. Knowing how we play, they were happy to lock down their penalty area and let us have the ball in in non-threatening areas. I thought they started to come out more towards the end of the first half and I was happy to see HT. In the second it was obvious pretty early that we weren't going to be bothering them much.

So disappointed in him today. A real chance to show his quality and dominate the game. But for 80 of the 90 minutes he was just… meh.

I think Sarr was really bad today, so Bentancur was caught trying to be DM but also be the midfield.
Note for the Cov goal he was chasing the ball out wide and diving to keep the ball in play rather than giving away a throw... nobody properly covered for him and we were cut open.
Disappointed in Gray today.

Just look at the final goal again. Coventry are doing a "nothing ball" bit of passing to someone for no reason... Maddison and Bentancur realise this and set a trap.
As soon as that guy is receiving the ball they pounce on him and win the ball and Spurs are away, straight into a disorganised backline.
This is the sort of stupid trap Spurs have been falling into, a nothing ball on half way which is easily stolen and then we were straight into the backline with space for Johnson to run into.

It ain't rocket science, we can't succeed with dribbly wingers against a set defence as we just don't have those dribblers, but we can succeed with moments like this. Sit back a bit and set traps.

Forgot he was playing until the last couple of minutes. This guy needs to hit form and shows some major consistency because i am struggling to see the hype.

I don't think he has been playing well, but I also don't think he has been playing in his best position.

He should be in Sarr's spot and and Bissouma or Grey (new signing) should be the deeper of the 3.

Let him get forward and make those passes and runs into the box we have seen from him before.

Also his pressing from high up the pitch was very good and led to some goals.

As a general point though, I have said for sometime that our CMs are overrated and really are not all that. None are dominant in the middle of the pitch which we have missed since Dembele, none are great as a playmaker a la Carrick or Modric, they are either jack of all trades master of none, or just blow hot and cold. Grey is a player with massive potential but you can't expect too much of him yet, but an established quality CM really would elevate this team.....

Bentancour was really good at give-and-go and has surprising pace and last minute reach when chasing down a ball.
worked best with a static Hojberg, very direct penetration down the centre that would give defences a big scare.
Don't see that now, he seems to be restrained to playing around the centre circle under ange

Quiet game from Bentancur today I thought. Seemed to play it very safe most of the time. He’s not looking quite like the no 6 I imagined / hoped for.

Still, no mistakes, and maybe that’s all we needed from him today!

I thought he quietly bossed the game and made Ugarte and Mainoo look like pub players. It's a big role he has to do - being the foundation for both Maddison and Kulu pushing on, without Sarr next to him offering something a bit more defensive. I think it was testament to his dominance that we didn't make the obvious 60 minute sub and bring Bissouma on to tighten the screw. He was comfortable all day, but only because he was very good.
