Roberto Soldado

To be honest I think it's pretty clear that the wheels were in motion for Benteke, but once we realised they were serious about their valuation and didn't need to sell no matter what, we decided Soldado was a better value signing for the money we were paying. Considering how quickly we moved onto Soldado I consider that the most likely scenario.

Far more likely than Paul Lambert being a persuasive genius and convincing Benteke he would be better served staying at Villa. Benteke would have been first choice for us and doubled his money, there would be absolutely no reason to stay at Villa if we were willing to pay the price for him. I think we've clearly just let Villa and Lambert spin that line so they can save a bit of face, because they aren't really a threat to us anymore. And we don't need to talk our own club down to sound more intelligent.

Benteke stayed, signed a new contract, we should be getting a quality striker and Villa keep their player. Everyone is happy and I think it's pretty obvious what the course of events were that lead to that.

Villa would have been a super signing though:(

Agreed, was massively excited when it seemed to have become a real possibility that we'd see him in a Spurs shirt. Not that I'm not excited about Soldado, but I watched a lot of Spanish football around the time David Villa was smashing it at Valencia, I didn't really have the time to follow overseas football last year, was lucky if I even got to see the Spurs game half the time so I haven't really had the chance to observe Soldado in the same way.

Villa wanted £25m, we wouldn't pay, but we're willing to pay that for Soldado so ...

But you're not factoring in HOW that sum is paid. We only pay 15 mill euro up front apparently; the rest installments over the contract length and part of those related to achievements.

Benteke on the other hand was almost certainly 25mill up front - no clauses or installments.

That's a BIG factor...

If we get Soldado and keep Bale then I'll be happy if we don't sign anyone else this window. We could sell Gomes, Thudd, Livermore and Ade to recoup the best part £15m+ and still have a decent squad. We'll have signed two players who will get into our starting 11 (ie so replaced 20% of our starting ourfielders) - that pretty decent.

In terms of squad, with the above sales, we'd have:
- 2 decent keepers
- 2 RBs
- 2/3 LBs
- 4 CBs
- 7 CMs for 3 positions assuming 4-3-3 (Sandro, Paulinho, Dembele, Holtby, Siggy, Parker, Carroll)
- 4 wide forwards for 2 positions (Bale, Lennon, Chadli, Townsend)
- 3 CFs (incl Dempsey)

That's more than two players per position with a lot of versatility and options, the ability to play 4-4-2, 4-2-3-1, 4-3-3 and some real star quality. If we improve other positions (e.g. new LB or replace Parker) then so be it but I'd be very happy with our window

ah true that.. ive tried to put benteke on the backburner in my mind............ really wanted us to sign the lad fantastic potential imo.

anyway cant be arsed for a debate on him again ....this is the soldier thread.......have done lots of research and I think/hope that we should get what we pay for....smart movement...playing on the shoulder......deadly finisher...... an older J Hernandez if you like....hope this gets announced soon....would be a massive boost to the club.

What are you basing this on? Not trying to start a discussion here, particularly since this is the Soldado thread, just curious.

Me too! Would be a great window for us.

Might want to see one or two younger players come in though, some Baldini specials ;)

he is on his way

decent post..... I would also be happy with the window...though judging on our cb's misdemeanours with injuries I would like us to buy a young cb prospect......though I spose Fryers could step in but doesn't fill me with loads of confidence.

I wouldn't. We need one more player, namely a striker. If Soldado gets injured ( a real possibility considering his slim stature and emphasis on quick turns and movement), we're back to relying on Defoe and Dempsey (assuming Ade will be sold). No, we need a striker to step up if/when that happens, as well as provide a bit of competition for that wing forward position.

Vucinic, Quagliarella, Lisandro Lopez....a cheap(ish) striker, who won't demand constant first team football but at the same time can offer something different to our other two forwards and one semi-forward (Soldado, Defoe, Dempsey). Get one of those in for less than 7-8 million quid and we will definitely be set.

Personally think Livermore and Carroll should be sent out on season-long loans if there's a decent team willing to take them and regularly play them. Beyond those two, though, Hudd, Ade, Naughton (assuming we keep Smith around to act as this year's Naughton), and one of Lennon or Townsend are all definitely players than can be shipped out to minimize expenditure. After that, we'll have a squad like this:

3 decent keepers (kept Gomes around because him, Sandro and Paulinho apparently get along + apparently we can't find a decent buyer)
2 RBs
4 CBs
2 LBs (With Rose able to shift into left midfield should the need arise)
6 CMs (Sandro, Paulinho, Dembele, Holtby, Sigurdsson, Parker)
3 LW/RW (Chadli, Lennon/Townsend, Bale)
3 CF (Soldado, Other New Striker, Defoe)

Plus the utility man Dempsey, who can be played at LW, RW, up front, CM, CAM....almost anywhere. All in all, I'd count that as a very, very solid squad, and a very successful window.

He's basing it on the usual misapprehension over how football teams pay other team fees.
The fees are always nearly always paid in instalments over a few years, unless you are Emirates Marketing Project.

Lennon and Townsend should both stay. In order...

1) Gomes, Huddlestone and Livermore should all be sold with immediate effect and Carroll should be loaned out.

2) Dempsey, Parker and Naughton (providing Smith is good enough to step up) can be sacrificed if more money is needed or if we need to save on wages.

3) One of Defoe and Ade can go (prefer it to be Defoe) providing we bring in a young striker to play as 3rd choice.

is your source no longer talking to you??? when is Bobby Soldier due to be presented?

I'm surprised he hasnt been presented today. I wonder if Spurs are waiting until tomorrow when we have Paulinho and Chadli in training at Hotspur Way and have all 3 take a photo with the kit?

That is absolutely not true. Manure paid us all the Berba fee in one payment at Levy's insistence. In fact was reading somewhere that it is common practice in England as opposed to the continent where it is always by installments.

Don't you think Villa would have had us over a barrel for all we had and insisted on one lump sum?
