Reminiscing about past World Cups

The official films of each tournament have been a great watch. I saw the 1974 world cup one last weekend and the 1994 one a few days later. Standard of play might be better now but i much preferred the less-commercialised stadiums and almost 'purer' approach to the game.

They're good aren't they. I watched the 62 one last weekend.

When was the last classic World Cup? I think that I would have to go back to 86.

1990 was the first one i saw live, even there it was pretty commercial. I have watched and re-watched the Cameroon-Argentina highlights this week, especially love it when 2 Cameroon players fail to take Caniggia out and the 3rd one just slams into him, gets a 2nd yellow card and off he goes.

I'd say 98. 94 was good as well, but in 98 everything was just right. Everyone since has been disappointing in some way. 2002 just didn't feel like a proper World Cup, last one was completely ruined by the vuvuzelas and Germany was a bit boring.

I would have to agree completely. The only let down of France '98 really was the fact that Germany as one of the powerhouses were quite poor. Some of the games once the groups were done were outstanding. I think for me, I found the tournament really enjoyable and the last I have done because England actually had a collection of 'proper' footballers combined with strong, up and coming talent. Adams, Ince, Seaman, Anderton, Sheringham and Shearer combined with Scholes, Neville, Beckham - All very respected regardless of who they played for, unlike now.

Argentina - England 2-2
France - Italy 0-0
Holland - Argentina 2-1
Brazil - Holland 1-1
Brazil - Denmark 3-2
Brazil - Chile 4-1
France - Croatia 2-1

All of those games were really decent ties and I distinctly remember Italy-Chile and Spain-Nigeria being quality games in the Group Stages.

1998 for me too. Superb World Cup.

2002, as much as it was exciting (and probably the last time I really cared for England), it wasn't as good as 98.. something just wasn't there about 2006, just didnt feel like a WC but very very happy that Italy and Pirlo won, still gutted Maldini never won a World Cup. 2010 was quite good, and I believe the most successful WC of all time, vuvuzelas were annoying though.

I quite liked 2002 in its own way although I didnt think it was a stimulating World Cup like France '98 was. 2006 I agree, something kind of didn't really spark but being in Germany it did feel a little more real being so near to England. Didn't like 2010 at all if I am honest. Found it a hard work tournament to watch, not unlike Euro 2012 which was just boring as well.

I was at that 1998 Quarter Final - Brazil 3 Denmark 2 in Nantes. It was a fantastic night, great atmosphere. The Danes and Brazilians got on fantastically together. The Brazil fans doing the samba inside and outside the ground. Ronaldo, Bebeto, Rivaldo, both Laudrups, Schmeichel. The Danes nearly taking it to extra time when they hit the bar at the end. Great memories.

1970. England "gold" coin collection from Esso or Shell. Collected them all. I was seven.:)

I collected them as well. This is still the "one" for me. The technicolour style footage, the radio type commentary. Brazil! Pele, Jairzinho, Rivelino, Roberto Carlos. England v Brazil, England v West Germany.

Lovely thread........86 was my first WC, I was 10 and Lineker was my hero so that was some tournament for me :) overall I thought it was a superb, some great games and world class players on show. The Azteca, just amazing, Maradona, unbelievable goals from a range of players/teams. Great memories

90 was special too, 94 without England was weird but somehow the atmosphere seemed joyous with the yanks and visiting fans filling every venue for every game and everyone having a great time.

I agree with the above views about 98. Very good WC, good teams/players/memorable moments

2002 was weird, just didn't take to it at all, same with 2010

2002 had awful timings which is why no one could get into it. Games at 7am etc. I liked it as the home fans got really into it which always makes it better. One of the reasons no one liked 2010, if the home fans aren't into it then it runs off on the rest.

I loved 2006 but probably because i had tickets for the final which was awesome.

My abiding memory of the 1990 world cup was watching the England v Cameroon game on a cross channel ferry on the way back from France. The weather was awful and we were held outside Dover for ages whilst they waited for the waves to drop, so that it was safe to enter the harbour.
