humiliation practically any agreement will be. There has to be so,e achievement that will justify Russia’s huge casualties - casualties that have not yet been admitted but the rumors about which are spreading and eventually will not be possible to hide.
It seems to me that clearly attempts have already been made in this direction. The first of these are the, scientifically utterly absurd, claims that Americans have been using Ukrainian labs to develop deadly viruses that would be pathogenic only to Slavic peoples. As a result of
Russia’s “special operation” all the samples have now been destroyed. Thus Putin can claim to have saved Russia from something truly dreadful that would make covid look like a mild cold. Clearly this is not going to work on many but the very absurdity of the idea suggest that
purpose is justification of Putin’s decision to invade.
Another indication is the emphasis on the claim that Russia is really fighting the combined forces of the entire West lead by America rather than just Ukraine. Failure to fully prevail in a war against the world’s more powerful block is much less damning than having been defeated by a despised country with 1/3 of Russia’s population..
Russia will also attempt to expand the territories of puppet Donetsk and Luhansk “People’s Republics” and try to for, at least one more around the captured city of Kherson. It will demand that Ukraine recognizes these puppets as well as Russia’s rule over Crimea.
These demands, together with a promise not to try to join NATO, are the maximum that Zelensky can even consider. If he goes beyond that, the agreement will be rejected by the great majority of Ukrainians and Zelensky’s authority, so hard earned, will evaporated almost overnight. The fight will continue.
Rather than recognizing Russia’s conquests, Zelensky is more likely to offer that Ukraine will not attempt to regain them by force. But even thiswould require a referendum, as Ukraine’s president has no power to amend the constitution by himself.
Therefore if there is an agreement, I would expect it to be similar to the one signed by Lebed and Maskhadov in Khasavyurt.
The reason why it was possible was because the wording was so vague that each side could interpret it in its own way. Thus according to the. He hen version Russia recognized the independent Republic of Ichkeria and Maskhadov as its President. According to the Russian version, Chechnya remained a part of the Russian Federstion and Maskhadov became only the President of an autonomous Republic of RF. This set the stage for the new war 3 years later.
