Politics, politics, politics (so long and thanks for all the fish)

You see I don't really understand this paragraph. How are we, the general population being screwed?

While I do think we need to control the numbers coming in, we also need to challenge some of these narratives particularly the one in the statement I've quoted.

My parents are first generation immigrants. My dad, in particular, escaped abject poverty, living in a wooden shack which could get badly damaged when the hurricanes came, having to protect their food and clothing from rats and c0ckroaches. He came to England to train and work with not a penny to his name. He and mum since separated, both own their own homes as do both their kids. They demonstrate what can you can achieve in this country through hard work, even when you start with nothing. And their story is not unique.

Don't get me wrong, we have problems in this country but we also have an education system that is the envy of the world, a free at point of care health system, political stability and freedoms to basically live our lives as we want, vibrant cities that attract millions of tourists and incredible natural beauty. If you work hard and want to you can live a decent life here. It's why I love this country. Yeah we are going through some tough times but so are the rest of the fudging world and we are more shielded than most.

Now compare with Sudan, where this a raging civil war, or Somalia which is ravaged by drought and political instability and/or terrorism or Afghanistan where girls struggle to get an education. Do you wonder why people are running from those countries?

Clearly we can't accept everyone and anyone who does come here and becomes a citizen needs to ensure that they respect our laws and culture.

I looked up the meaning of Patriot - Someone who is willing to fight for or uphold their country's interests and values. I consider myself a "patriot." I love my country and served it as a Police officer and now work for a local authority. I can see how people can get on.

But I'll tell you who are not Patriots, the likes of Farage, Robinson and Hopkins who keep talking this country down, telling us how terrible everything is. Or the cretins who think it is ok to deface British landmarks with red crosses attack police officers or set fire to people in hotels.. Patriots are people who defend all British communities irrespective of race, religion or origin.

What we are witnessing at the moment is not patriotism IMHO, it's ugly nationalism being driven by people who want power to spread their toxic agenda. This is why I believe we need to push back and not accept their poisonous rhetoric.
Well said.

Lovely post mate thank you. It really warms me to see people stick up for their community and everyone in it. I believe we get out of our troubles by people sticking together and trying to find solutions together. Not by dividing communities and pitting one group against another.

On politics, I don't think Starmer is a particularly good PM. In many ways similar to Rishi Sunak. Both I think are decent people just not great leaders. But unlike the Farages of this world I genuinely believe both are/were trying to do the best for all communities. And the only reason I'm currently still supporting Labour is because the decent Centrist Tories have gone, and so the alternative are Reform who will imho be a disaster for our country.
It will be interesting to see if the likes of Cleverley and Tugdenhat seize the reigns again after the Tories tank in the local elections. The big problem they have is that there is no depth of quality in the junior ranks, as Johnson and Truss flushed out anyone with a brain and a bit of integrity

I think there's much to be found outside your front door. Much of it good, much of it worthwhile. Without sounding too hippy:)...it's real and authentic

Globalisation first came with industry and corporates...now SM as globalised people, bringing an endless stream of things to know, things to worry about, things to argue about and things to make sense of. With no off switch.

Localism (in the positive sense) needs to make a return. We actually get to know (like, really know) people. It would be good to think people might actually seek this out, a backlash of sorts.

How much of your life is 'on YOU'?

Do you still back yourself to make good decisions?

Do you feel you've lost autonomy?
There is only so much you can do. I work hard. I have got myself a good job. I don't have an outrageous mortgage and I don't have tonnes of debt. I cut my cloth accordingly. But i'm increasingly cutting my cloth from smaller and smaller pieces of fabric. I haven't lost autonomy. I've lost security and I worry about the future.

Whatever...

It's from last week you melon.

And I'm sorry you were racially abused. Wtf has that got to do with me?
