Pedro Porro

I think he can be. I'd also like to think that as well as helping in attack, we'll become better defensively as we should hold the ball a bit better and have higher share of possession, which in turns takes pressure off the defence as they're not under the cosh as much

Potentially another excellent window from Paratici

Ball progression against a high press in particular can be a real issue for us.

We have decent and even very good pass and move, combination players at the back and in midfield (including wing backs). Not good enough collectively perhaps, but decent.

We have very few players that can do that, but also have the option of progressing the ball through dribbling. Emerson, Doherty, Sessegnon, Perisic, PEH, Bentancur, Skipp, Bissouma.

Kulusevski does at times when he drops deeper. Son tries and definitely can. But in midfield probably Bentancur and Bissouma are the best at it? At wing back there's very little of it.

I think having someone really good at just running past a player with the ball can both create good situations and make it harder to press us as a team.

I have no doubts that he has very good attacking qualities.

Just to mention though, those fbref stats I think compares him both to full backs and wing backs. Doherty similarly has a lot of green attacking numbers. And when Doherty is playing well within our system, with Kulusevski ahead of him he's a really effective attacking threat.

Porro's attacking stats are impressive, but with context not quite as impressive as that picture may lead one to believe I think.

He does offer a very different attacking style and more attacking quality than our other options, no doubts. Those numbers makes it seem like he's one of the very best attacking wing backs in the world, I'm not (yet at least) convinced that's true.

I do think he can be a transformative signing though. Even more so if we can also sort out some of our defensive issues. That may take more time though.
Offensively he is one of the best, but he has areas where he can improve a lot. He can get a tad eager to get forward, leaving him exposed. He also tries a lot of high risk, high reward passes, that leads to a rather poor passing success rate of around 70%. His defensive positioning also has room for improvement.
But all in all, I think he'll be a positive addition, that will require defenders to be more occupied on our right side, and thus probably open up space for the likes of Kulu and Kane.

That said, these are qualities that are very similar to a player we already have, so that leaves me a bit puzzled... Spence must really be brick in training!

And let’s remember, for whatever decencies he has Conte has a track record of successfully converting wingers into good wing backs. He was originally a winger, and I have no doubt he is only going to get better both offensively and defensively under Conte….

Well, we'll see. Can't say that many of our players have improved much under Conte. Hopefully this lad will be a success.

Definitely not doubting his attacking qualities.

Relatively high risk for high reward fits in well with our fairly direct style of play imo.

May see some chaotic moments if he gets his positioning wrong and Romero is his usual hyper aggressive "out of position" self at the same time.

Similarities with Spence in terms of profile. But I'm assuming he's seen as quite a bit better than Spence by Conte/Paratici. Perhaps also seen as a better quick fit into Conteball?

I think Sessegnon has improved defensively. Emerson has improved on the ball. Difficult to say with Bentancur and Kulusevski as they weren't here before Conte. Difficult to say with Sarr and Gil too as they've looked good recently (small sample), but who knows how they would have done if given the chance earlier.

The kind of improvement I think you're talking about mostly happens with younger players.

When Conte trusts younger players I think he helps their development. Issue is finding younger players he will trust. I'm assuming he will trust Porro if we sign him.

They are going to announce this after he plays the cup final on the weekend.
Feel like that is what is holding this up

Thats exactly it as we’ve agreed to let him play in the Taca da Liga Final. Deal will likely be announced on Sunday. Not sure how they could get around announcing him as joining us but have him still play in the Final otherwise.

You could sign the deal, but it being conditional on him not getting injured in the cup final

Assuming this deal happens, I think it could be quite transformative in terms of our performances. Adds some much needed pace and threat out wide. I think we'll see our performances step up a level

I would hope so, having a specialist and highly rated RWB in a system that relies heavily on the WBs does sound nice!

Going to assume he plays today, is over here tomorrow evening for medical and announced Monday…

You know we always save our last transfer announcement for deadline day itself, just to make sure we appease the turn up at the training ground tossers

You and others might be jumping the gun. Ornstein is saying there has been no breakthrough in talks with Sporting….

You can watch him tonight, Sporting vs Porto 19.45 in the cup final (Taca da Liga). He will presumably be in tears, whatever happens in the game, regardless of if he is leaving. But if he rips off his kit to reveal a giant coc k [tattoo] then we'll know for sure.
