Paul Gascoigne - what a player

What a legend. Stumbled across a few Youtube clips this morning, brought tears to my eyes. I had Gazza-slippers when I was little, haha, he was my favorite player by far.

Here's to a merry x-mas for Gazza and the rest of you, hope he gets the help he needs and manages to get to grips with things again! Your footballing skills won't be forgotten! =D>

I think it's a little early to be saying that, he looks very promising, but Gazza was one of the best players in the world for a couple of years around 1990 up to his injury in the cup final.

I'd say he was on the same level as Bale was last year. Not saying he wasnt better than Bale, I'm just saying that he was on ridiculous form but there were still better players than him in world football who were a class above like Messi and Ronaldo were last season to Bale.

yea that's fair enough, injury meant we'll never know if he could have carried on that form for a few more years.

I see him compared to Barclay or Wheelchair and it's ludicrous. The boy joined us at 19 for £2.2m and he was simply awesome. The best player at Italian 90 by far and just a magnificent, ebullient, outstanding talent. When his career was ruined at Wembley he was what? 22? The lad would have been the greatest English player of all time and very probably taken us to world and European Cup glory but for that silly challenge. As it was he was still awesome. And his best years were at the Lane.

Wheelchair comparisons are pathetic.

Barkley comparisons are justified. Very similar.

What a relief to open this thread and realise 1) he isn't dead and 2) hasn't done anything mental today.

Yeah, sorry about that, should've stated it in the title. I hope the club still does what it can to help Gazza take care of himself, the poor lad.

Those were my thoughts exactly mate. I waited ages before i opened the thread because I find it too depressing how he's turned out. I haven't watched any of these interviews or documentaries on him since that China one, I just find it too sad.

Watching those videos it comes as a shock to be reminded just how brilliant he was. Not even Messi slaloms through defences with quite that power and verve.

That goal against Scotland was one of the best I've seen. He still looked the goods at Rangers from those clips.

Remember going to Glasgow for a weekender. Went to see Rangers v Motherwell (no great shakes). Rangers won 5-0, Gazza scored a hattrick, Brian Laudrup scored two. They played Motherwell on their own, it was like the Scottish version of the Best and Marsh Fulham game.

Other great memories were his home debut against Arsenal, scoring after losing a boot and of course Wembley.
