Our Dream Team from the 2000s

thfcsteff

Garth Crooks
I am of that vintage who saw the 80s cups/UEFA Cup/Glenn, Ossie, Archie, Crooksie, etc...they always get in our all-times.
But I was thinking about how many incredible players we have had since 2000, just sadly not all at the same time. Thus I thought I'd try and do a starting 11 and 9 subs based on the best of those. If interested, join the fun/chat. Pick your own formation.

I'll choose a 4-2-3-1 system.

Lloris

Rose
Vertonghen
King
Walker

Dembele
Modric

Dele
Berbatov
Bale

Kane

subs: Vicario, Van de Ven, Deki, Carrick, Lennon, Defoe, Eriksen, Dier, Keane

There are some obvious holes here, and frankly, it is an idealist's choice. But I just wonder how many titles and CL's we'd have won with that front 4 and Luka prompting????

EDIT: The hive mind has reminded me of my stupid omission of Sonny...so the bench is rejigged as is the first 11, with the caveat that Sonny I am including is included on the faster model!!!!!! I am losing VdV from the bench in order to maintain non-pragmatic beautiful creativity!!!!!!

Lloris

Rose
Vertonghen
King
Walker

Dembele
Modric

Son
Dele
Bale

Kane

subs: Vicario, Berbatov Deki, Carrick, Lennon , Defoe, Eriksen, Dier, Keane

Love the team. Not sure I can beat it, so can probably only add a couple of names to the squad to help get some depth.

Toby has to be in that squad, perhaps even Woodgate. Then you'd probably have Charlie and Benny as the backup full-backs, although Carr was still our RB in the first few years of the millenium. Backup keeper is a tough call. I'd probably go Venom, but obviously Robbo was immense for a while.

The other VDV was obviously another class act. Like Big Vic, we didn't see enough of these two but in their prime were fantastic.

I'd have to find a slot in the squad for Sonny as well.

4-2-3-1 is probably best for a lot of our teams

When I look at your team
- Rose is by far the weakest link (his peak was a very short period), be interesting that we have no other option
- I'd suspect the team would be better balanced with Dele moving to bench and Eriksen to midfield
- VDV (Rafa) has to at least make the bench
- Did you purposely leave Son completely out?

And there is it...my egregious error number 1!!!!!!!!

Massive oversight on my part. I have actually gone back and amended my initial selection (left that in but rejigged for a round two)...we have had some fantastic players...

So many choices in the end. I pondered positional back-ups, but in the end weighted my bench with glory. It just got even more weighted when I realised my Sonny omission. I lost VdV off the bench as I could not leave out one of Berba. Keane or Defoe. Leaving me with just Eric Dier as a defender. I think if injuries force it, I'd just go back 3 and bring on extra mids. Who'd be a manager? As you can see, if me it'd be wreckless but beautiful LOL...definitely relying on Dele off the shoulder, and lots of interchange between those front four, with Luka playmaking from deep. It kills me not to start Berba, but it is either him or Dele in that spot for me, and Dele blends a little better with the overall, even though Berba is probably one of the 2-3 most gifted players we have had in the 2000s...perhaps if I could take my bias out, Berba starts...arrrrgggggggghhhhhhh :)
