OOMT - Tottenham Hotspur V Boro

Yessss, shoulda been outta sight by HT, but a win is a win. Can't do that against tougher teams who have better attacks or more clinical finishing.

Played well and in control though, well done my Son ! Laughed at tinkling off the M'brough players, see their frustration - three losses on the bounce now ? We keep on ticking. Have to win away in the CL Tuesday night now, COYS !!!

I will die young because of this football club. We can make even the most one-sided affairs into extremely nervewrecking stuff. Good three points though, and a good start to the league season. We do need, however, need to be more ruthless against better teams.

A fine win.
Moaners will go mental - should've scored more, etc, etc - but on a normal day the ref gives at least two stonewall penalties and we ease into a lovely big fat win...
When we needed to we shut up shop. Their goal came from a curious moment which for me could easily have been a foul (though I will say Rose would not have been muscled like that) but generally PLENTY to be happy about.
Special word for Janssen...if his fitness steps up he will be an able substitute for the irreplaceable Kane. His link-up/hold-up pay was great for 70 minutes, and that is what we need more than anything. Goals? Of course. But in Sonadona we have those and in others, we just need to make sure they can get them, and Janssen's holdup play will be vital for that...
COYS!!!

indeed, we had more attempts against just Sunderland and Boro than Leicester had in the entirety of last season

The team looked shagged. But 3 points. Should have eased home 2nd half. Some questionable things 2nd half:

1) the ref. 50-50 decisions all going for them, and none for us including the clean pen first half.

2) Poch's team talk. We looked like we were trying to see the game out with the CL in mind. Started the half okay, but lacked conviction or was it fitness?

3) How the players react to pressure is worrying. At 2-1 the stadium came to life, boro team came to life. We wilted. We need a compact shape for such times, and to focus on passing, playing the ball. We're clearly the better team, but totally lost our cool under pressure.

A fantastic win never the less. Ran them off the park first half. Young team n all that. Learn from it...

that's the thing, it's rarely a penalty if you are wearing a Spurs shirt, we just don't get them given

Best start to a Premiership season and we haven't got going in the way we appear to want to see it. Amazing. Let's not moan too much folks...as for Son, again, what a performance!

And still haven't conceded a goal from open play in the league.

I hope Poch flags up the ref. Lays down a marker for refs. So they don't do that to us again. All the marginals going their way, and no crucial pen to get the 3rd goal. Just put something in refs minds so they know Poch will flag any poor decisions, and a few of the 50-50 decisions might come our way in the future.

As bad a 'performance' from the ref as I've seen.

Very good first half, should have been a lot more comfortably ahead and would have been but for some atrocious refereeing. Second half a different story. We took our foot off the gas big time and handed Boro the initiative. As a result, and helped by their subs, their possession improved and they started to look a lot more purposeful in the final third, while we still got into good positions but looked indecisive in comparison — dithering, never choosing one pass when three would do, losing or misplacing the ball constantly trying to walk it into the net through a packed area. Son still the only one apparently willing to pull the trigger when an opportunity arose. Still plenty of room for improvement.

So deserved. I thought the players were great and we should have been out of sight. We're never gonna dominate an entire away game for 90 mins so I don't mind needing to hang in a bit when they score and lift the crowd, we did that and beyond a Rhodes header they didn't have anything else of note to worry us.

Our squad depth is awesome. Everyone slots in and does their job. Son great, everyone else really good.

Have to say I thought Alli was a bit too casual though. He has to stop messing the clear cut chances up and I think sometimes he has a tendency to try a wild shot when he shouldnt.

Can't complain too much though. We are right in the title race and will be up there come the end of the season. Liverpool and Emirates Marketing Project also look good but I back us to make a good fist of 2nd given our squad.

Phew. We lost control from the minute Adama and Rhodes came on until about the 80th minute. We'd had several presentable chances prior to that, but we're really wasteful when it comes to finishing, and Alli is the biggest offender in this regard - as someone mentioned earlier, he misses an almost open goal (on average) once a game.

The positives -

Good, controlled first half - fast start, the opposite of what usually happens with us.

Defending - save for Sissoko's unforgivably poor defending at the back post for Gibson's goal, we did well defending, and looked assured under pressure save for when we let Adama run at our back line. Toby and Walker were great on the right, as is becoming usual - Verts and Davies were a bit more hassled on the left, but I'd put that down to Alli drifting more than anything (when compared to Wanyama's role in front of Toby + Walker).

Son - Lightning. As always, was a more frustrating with his decision-making when it comes to playing team-mates in, but boy did he look sharp, incisive and dangerous individually today.

Negatives -

Intricate approach play - if something's becoming clear to me, it's that we have two methods of creating chances - there is the quick, direct method of a long ball followed by a pass to the wing and then a cut-in and shot/lay-off for a shot, and then there's the more indirect method of a ball from deep setting up combination triangles played with increasing speed around the box until there's an open sight on goal from close-in. The former is currently our most effective route to goal, but we're looking rusty and a note off the pace on the latter - balls into feet aren't sticking, passes are usually a second or two off and we delay through balls for just a second or two longer than we have to, which usually snuffs out the chance. It's far more difficult to play close to the opponent's box, of course - but we have an area for improvement here.

Lloris' distribution - teams are picking up on his seemingly suspect clearances and long passes, and we should maybe involve him in play less until his kicking improves a tad.

Alli - looked rusty and off the pace. Being played deep really isn't suiting him, at least for now.

Overall, three points is three points - would have liked to avoid making hard work out of the game, but there isn't that much to be dissatisfied about despite that.

We had three "75% chance" penalties. I can understand why a homer ref wouldn't give ONE of them to an away team, but the second would always be given... and after you get three of them, they DO mount up and the ref should definitely have said enough's enough, pen.

Bloomin' 'ell, we are 2nd already ?? That backline and mid are just doing sooo fine, amazing job really by the lads, Poch has really got us set up sooo strong.
