***OMT*** Tottenham Hotspur vs Fulham

BoL you make a good case for football played in such a theoretical way. Most people on here ( not the most objective audience I know, but the only one I can rely on as I dint see the game myself,) thought we got out of jail with two wonder goals after an abject performance, not part of some grand pre prepared plan.

On your wider point, if this is indeed AVB's masterplan for the rest of the season and beyond, I have to say that it is not one that I for one relish. Suffocating the opposition is not how I want to watch football. Sorry.

So in a match that required 2 goals to win, we scored 2 goals. They scored from an individual mistake made by a player that's probably only playing due to injuries to others. We had 18 shots, in a London derby, away from home.

How is that getting out of jail? If Usain Bolt wins a sprint by 0.01 seconds us that getting out of jail or simply winning?

I know Walker gets alot of **** but i think he's been one of our best players this season

I mentioned in the 'who will be player of the season' thread that Walker will be this and he is on his way. He has had one or two ****ty moments but all in all a 100% improvement from last season and has contributed vastly

Yep agree with the Walker praise. He's been much better this term. Unfortunately even when he's good he's always got a big mistake in him. But credit the lad

there is definitely some strange logic, you can't say we were lucky because of 2 wonder goals AND ignore that fact that their goal was blind luck as well

And by the same token, some people have made their minds up that AVB can do no wrong, regardless of what happens.

(not taking the mickey, just balancing up the argument as it cuts both ways).

It doesn't really cut both ways if the argument from one side results on blatant inaccuracies. e.g. 'we created nothing tonight' or anything along those lines. We CLEARLY did.

That's a fair analysis BoL, but we have been consistently dull.

The best teams play effective attacking football. And that.is want from my club, not to be a.****e version of mourinhos cheatski or to win by boring the opposition into conceding

What puzzles me is how P55 can make such definitive statements on a game he hasn't seen

tbh BOL stuck with his opinion throughout but have a look at your posts in this thread when we're 0-1...i'm sorry but they don't sound like they're from someone that liked what he was watching.
"STupid ball from Holtby to Lamela, the sort of ball which KILLS us…holds onto it too long and releases to Lamela too late (the man being surrounded by three players!!!!!)…RELEASE EARLY!
I think Lamela's on for one tonight, he's getting stronger and stronger..."

"Holtby is not good enough. No influence at all. Nothing."

hell you even recite a passage from the bible or something ..

"Y'know…in The Loafer's paradise, where ****tails are sipped, the odd cigar puffed and sunshine beats down on us all in a wonderful way, Lamela and Berbatov on the same side, against defenders like Daws, would be delightful to watch. A flick here, a cheeky inside pas there, a lazy laconic stride and nutmeg before a back-heeled assist…

sigh

Don't wake my up, the weather's nice and I just saw a parrot on the roof of the stand as I adjusted my hat for the sun."

Very surprised by how positive some of you are on here, Jesus. We won and Holtby scored a great goal, those are certainly positives!

But come on, before Vlad's 35 yarder, we were f**king terrible. Shots from range got us out of jail again, and it was the same story for last season wasn't it?

I posted in the AVB thread that I really want it to work out for him, but I just don't see the progression in our play, or what the plan is when we attack. As an attacking unit, we are poor. We were playing one of the worst teams in the division tonight and we laboured, really struggled. The only time we looked half dangerous was when they got a corner and we could break on them.

We were a great hit away from mulling over dropped points and a poor performance. With no Bale to produce those moments on a consistent basis, is it any wonder we are struggling for goals this season? 52 league games now for AVB and the same, ponderous and rather blunt attacking play is still our big problem.

Let's have a look at those 52 Premier League games...

Won: 28

Drawn: 12

Lost: 12

Goals For: 79

Goals Against: 61

Winning Percentage: 53.85%

Points Won: 96 from 156 total available.

Average Points Won per Game: 1.846

Needless to say, that's the best record of any Tottenham Hotspur manager since the club joined the Football League in 1908.

...and

you can't say AVB gets no credit when Holtby and Chiriches make a good contact between ball and foot YET blame AVB when Defoe and Paulinho fail to get good contact between ball and foot

I thought when we put holtby deeper we played really well. I would have kept sandro on instead of paulinho though. Our problem is speed of though in the centre, not behind the striker. Its in CM not AM where we need the passer. For all intents and purposes i'd rather have Eriksen or Holtby deeper with Paulinho further up as it means we can control the passing game. However I'd rather have 3 Ams, 1 DM and 1 deep lying playmaker as we did at the end of the game. Inspired stuff by AVB, he could easily have gone 4-4-2 or gone with Sig.

Steff more:

"The players just don't look up for it..."

"Scary..cannot believe Holtby got on ahead of Sigurdsson…blows me away…especially as Sigurdsson has scored two goals this season and is our second highest PL scorer!…

Optimistic Steff says that if we were to win tonight it would be a massive boost…

Realistic Steff says it won't happen and that there's trouble in the store..."

so you were just as negative as a lot of posters when we were 0-1 down because of the poor performance...and it's natural to be negative after watching that dross too. Lets not try and make this some sort of sustained campaign to make everything AVB does look bad.

KD I think you need to factor in that Steff is borderline schizophrenic and cut him some slack

PS - I only said borderline because I suspect he is American and will sue me

You can if your a typical fickle fan and we have a truck load of them.

They can't the positives in any situation.

Careful, you'll get yourself into trouble..

It's the system we kinda play when Dembele is with Sandro. I've said this a lot but it's either Sandro of Capoue and one of Dembele/Paulinho/Holtby. Wither of the latter 3 can plays as makeshift 10 and arguably the best we have seen is Paulinho against United IMO, but none of them are natural at it.

You'd expect this team to look like the best Spurs side ever then, right? Or does that just go to prove that, in isolation, stats aren't always very meaningful?

If we keep playing in this same way, it will end badly for us. We are treading water without Bale and I don't see anything in AVB's management to indicate that things will change for the better.
