OMT - Tottenham Hotspur vs Ajax

Any team news yet ?

Feeling nervous about this match already. Never expected us to be in the CL semi final this season. Now that we are there, we should make the most of it. Wish Kane, Son and Lamela are available for this match. We need all the players to play their best game against Ajax. It will help us greatly if we can score an early goal and then go for more goals to kill the game off. Let's hope we will put up a good performance and get a comfortable win to bring to the second leg away.

Yep, I'd really leave Llorente on bench for this. His immobility will play into the hands of De Ligt's strengths, whilst launching it up there to him all night will allow Ajax to dominate possession. I also think the necessity to get the full backs high up to cross the ball to him will leave us exposed to the quick Ajax counter.

For me, we stifle their midfield three and press them hard. Not allow them to get it forward to Neres, Ziyech and Tadic who can cause serious problems.

I'd go with -

Tripps -- Toby -- Jan -- Rose

-- Sissoko -- Dier -- Big Vic

------ Alli ---- Eriksen ------

To all the people without Llorente in their teams? What is our tactic to beat the Ajax press?
Are you expecting us to pass it throught them with Dier/Wanyama and Sissoko.
We are hitting it long to Llorente and getting on the end of knockdowns.

It's such a hard one to decide the right approach.
 
Heard de boer on talksport, basically ajax are disappointed they aren't playing City, a big and better team than spurs, and they expect to win comfortably.
 
I am out this evening and will return home after the match is over, not knowing the score.
It's going to be an anxious moment as I find out the final score.
I'm pretty sure I'll be able to find a place to then watch the whole match back, if it's worth doing so.

I'm very concerned. No Son or Kane or Winks is such a drawback, even at home. I fear the range of talent in the Ajax team, so many individuals that can hurt us.

Pass. I like Llorente but he is immobile and we have to change the whole way we play when he does. It was partly Sissoko going off of course but when Llorente came on, our attacking threat from open play almost immediately disappeared.

Ajax are incredibly fluid, incredibly mobile and we need to match that as best we can. We don't want to fall into the Real/Juventus traps where they run rings around us.

Llorente has shown no ability to do that in the last two games or for most of the season. Sissoko is our best chance of getting through them and not necessarily by passing. Otherwise, we might be best being very solid and inviting them onto us and then hit them at pace with our front 3 similar to what we did to Dortmund last season or in the first half in Manchester. If we're going to do that, I'd have Foyth all day long ahead of Trippier.

Ajax want us to pass us out from the back. They are waiting for it. Imagine Our midfield against this.

 
My heart is saying be brave. My head is gulping without Kane, Winks, Son, a slightly unfit Sissoko and no Lamela to help with high press (as well as Tripper's current form...).

I hope whatever we do, we keep it tight. By next week, we have Son back, Wanyama, Dier, and Sissoko hopefully up to match fitness and maybe Lamela back? Who the hell knows?

Just hope we don't regret any silly mistakes.

What exactly are we going to do? I don't think he's very mobile and if we just lump the ball up to him, even if he wins the first ball, I'd imagine they'll win a lot of the knockdowns anyway.

I was just about to write the same thing.

If our midfield (particularly Eriksen and Dele) are firing tonight I expect us to also create some lovely passages of passing play as well.

I’m past the point of worrying now and just want to enjoy where we’ve got to and where this game (if we’re truly up for it) can take us.

I would actually sit a little, wait for the press and then have Victor, Rose, Moose and Moura run at them with power and pace.
Alli and Eriksen in support to pick up the loose balls and do the magic.

Like a swarm. Rather than chances 70/30s off of Llorente. He isn't mobile enough for anything other than precise balls into him - the Ajax press will stop any decent angles for those passes.

Id definitely play similar to how we did at City.

Congest the middle 3rd, stay compact and work hard on pressing them, and then hit them on the break.

I dont think we have the personel to try and dominate them playing keep ball, if anything this will play into their hands. We need to be more strategic, and if that means setting up like an away side then so be it.

We are literally at the bare bones, we must do what we must and to hell with convention.

Agree. Get them engaged centrally and use Verts and Toby as soon as they engage. Almost pressing ourselves with the ball, pedestrian like. Play poker, see who blinks first.
Should be a really interesting tactical battle.

With our shortages up front, I think that we need to go three at the back and push the full backs up.
