Its funny that people seem to suggest that Liverpool are currently just behind us in their development and next year when they bring in Klopp's players they'll be sorted and up and challenging. The assumption (implicitly, as least) is that we have now somehow reached our glass ceiling: after two full seasons at the helm Poch has finished his work we are where we are. We will be buying players in the Summer on a much more solid foundation than Liverpool and looking to add to an almost title winning squad ahead of a Champions League campaign.
Why will our development be stunted? Why will we not continue to improve and keep them at arms length?
Also, this luck with injuries tag is annoying me. Njie has missed virtually the whole season, and was one of only a clutch of Summer signings. Based on his first team performances to date, Onomah is not yet ready; whilst Pritchard also had his entire season ravaged by injury. Every time we are struggling to create or need a goal, i look to the bench and think 'hmmm, we luck a bit of pace and guile in the attacking third'. Why might that be? Because two of our wingers have been injured all season, leaving us with just 4 real options where we would have had 6. I remember Brain Eclipse making a point about Son being Kane's understudy, and now I think maybe he's right. He's definitely got goals in him; i thought he wasn't right for that role based on Kiessling being the main man at Leverkusen, and I can't remember who it was at HSV (Rudnevs maybe), with Son playing off them.
But actually it makes sense to think we were going to go into the season with Son backing up Kane (a player who had scored 10+ goals in each of the last 3 Bundesliga seasons), with the forward options in behind being Alli, Lamela, Eriksen, Chadli, Pritchard and Njie. Makes sense: nice balance and variety. But losing two to injury for the entire season has disrupted that someone, and resulted in the likes of Onomah being called upon well before their time.
Nonetheless, the media's main pre-occupation with Tottenham appears to be getting Poch and Kane through the door at Old Trafford.
