OMT - Tottenham Hotspur FC vs Tamworth FC

Tamworth FC - Tottenham Hotspur FC

The FA Cup 3rd round

Sunday January 12th @ 1230, The Lamb Stadium

Tamworth are 16th in the National league (conference league, league below league 2). They knocked out Burton and Huddersfield in the previous rounds (both league 1 sides).

They consist of part time players who train on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Their goalie supposedly has a lazer sharp long ball in him and loves to hit it towards their striker.

Why do I have this memory of us playing Maidenhead in the FA Cup last year?

The 5 absolute starters for this for me have to be Kinsky, Dorrington, Moore, Lankshear and Yang. And Solanke, Porro and Kulu have to be no where near the squad. So perhaps something like:

----------------------Kinsky
----Spence-----Gray------Dorrington----Regulion
------------------Hall-----Sarr
------Yang----------Maddison---------Moore
--------------------Lankshear

Similar team to what I’d be thinking. I do think we should have players like Kulusevski and Solanke on the bench but only to be used as last resort in the worst case scenario that the team we field looks completely disjointed as the team did against Coventry and so we need to rescue a result.

I don’t want Spence to be starting or Gray but realise that there comes a point in which we don’t just want to be playing an under 21s team. So it is just getting the balance right. If we do take a comfortable lead then I’d want us to be taking off players to be rested for midweek v Arsenal.

I’d probably play Dragusin over Gray. Give him a rest. I’d also play Austin over Kinsky, Austin played well against Saudi Sportswashing Machine and deserves another game it’s not like Kinsky will play behind a regular defence. Also a game we should be winning fairly easily you don’t want to risk an injury in it either.

Is it a grass pitch?

Is it true it’s an early KO as they don’t have floodlights?

They have a 3G pitch and LED floodlights, I never take these games for granted as I'm not a fan of the type of disjointed teams we put out in these games. I expect their long throw-in to cause us problems as it's not something our defenders will have come across these days, it's something you think should be simple to handle but the trajectory is awkward.

If you have players on the bench, they have to do full conditioning training, warm-ups etc. It's not actually much of a break for them, compared to being on a full recovery schedule.

If we can't beat some bus drivers and roofers with a team with 3 full internationals and the rest U21 internationals, we'll deserve to go out!

The 3G thing is over-estimated. Most football (down the pyramid) is played on this now. I've not been to our training ground, but most top teams do their main winter training on indoor 3G pitches. It plays just like good grass.

Longer term they cause a bit more wear on things like knee and achilles tendons. But no different to ordinary hard summer pitches. There's no particular difference for a one-off though.

Think my starting eleven would be

Austin
Spence, Dorrington, Dragusin, Reggie
Sarr, Bergval
Moore, Madds, Son
Lankshear

Try and get the game won and then give Olusesi and other kids their debuts. That poor guy has sat on too many 1st team benches this season not to get that privilege. Be good to see Richi and Yang on that pitch at some point as well. Perhaps it would be good for Werner's confidence as well to get involved.

Any of the keepers
Spence Dragusin Dorrington Reguilon
Gray Sarr
Yang Maddison Moore
Lankshear
Richalison to get some game time.
I don't think it matters which keeper. Kinsley to get more game time with us, Austin after his last performance, Forster to get some game time after illness.

I don't think the pitch is a problem for modern players, my grandson has played on them for years.

It's more that modern pitches are very different from the old Luton and Oldham ones. They play identical to grass - there's no big bounces or quick skids. The one difference from grass is that they do burn more if you try slide on them.

I've barely played on grass the past 2 years though. They are so ubiquitous down the pyramid now. I think all the groundsmen go laid off during Covid and grass has never really come back.

You're right, since PL era there have been 50 games against NL teams, 2 have beaten PL sides, one with Harry Kane in it, 8 have been draws, that's a pretty good record given the gap.
